Adopt-a-Bronco:
Mike Shanahan
Default Tribute to John Fox

When John Fox was coaching with great success for the Panthers and the media propped him up on an elite pedestal, I didn't see it. I thought he was a mediocre game-planner at best with some significant defensive talent.

Now that he's spent years in Denver where we can all observe him with a personal fervor, I still view him as a mediocre game-planner. That being said, I think Fox is off the charts in other aspects of coaching that are every bit as valuable.

I think Fox is EXTREMELY good at staffing and delegating... the guy's coaching staff is an assembly of "pro-bowl" coaches (if such a thing existed) and he clearly gives them enough reigns to instill their own philosophies.

Most importantly, Fox is the epitome of a players coach. A lot of the play of the team is elevated because the players want to play for him. They want to fight for him. (If you're familiar with organizational theory, Fox seems to embody human behavior perspective) The value of that can't really be overstated.

Here's to you, John Fox. Denver Bronco fans appreciate you, you handsome son-of-a-b****:

My favorite thing about Fox is his staff. It's been awhile since I've seen one so well erected.

The thing I like about John Fox the most is that he is polar opposite in just about every imaginable way from McJoshie. Holy f--k I hated that guy.

I want to say I was a huge Shanahan guy, as probably most of us were...

But I was excited about McDaniels bringing the high powered Pats spread that he had installed in NE. You have to remember he had put in place an offense that broke all sorts of records.... Flash forward just a month or two into his tenure he had pretty much gotten rid of all our young elite talent on offense, and thats when I didnt like him and his idea to give jobs to coaches like his brother that were HS coaches...

Once we hit rock bottom and went 4-12( ONLY good thing was getting Von) but it is so refreshing to have a proven HC that is respected by the league and his own players, but like it has been said his ability to bring in other GREAT coaches to help the staff is what sets Fox apart. It appears to me atleast he isnt headstrong in the sense that he is willing to give other high profile coaches a job, he isnt like the shanahan or BB type that want control over everything. He realizes that to get it done and put together a great team it requires help.

I loved the Fox hire from the beginning and I think he's a great coach. I wanted him because of his defensive background and he has managed to turn Denver's defense into one of the best in the NFL in a very short amount of time. As Rev says, he does not micro manage his staff and the players love playing for the guy. I think we were all shocked by the playoff loss but I think it will provide some real good ammo for the team this coming season.

I will salute John Fox when he doesn't take a knee with 35 seconds left and two time outs, and when he has the cojones to have Peyton Manning throw it on 3rd and 6 to win the game.

I'm hoping Gase will take this offense to the next level as JDR has with the defense. Let Fox do the seating assignments for the post game buffet.

Like has been said Fox is a great delegator and coach evaluator

One of the really underrated aspects of Fox is how well he appears to get along w/ Elway and the FO. It appears both Fox & Elway checked thier ego's at the door, and they really work well with each other to provide the team with the best available talent in FA & the draft each year given the budget they have. Elway said as much this year when describing the draft process in his PC's.

Also, I seem to remember Elway giving Fox the credit for being the driving force behind the decision to go after Manning last year. Of course, it was Elway that poured on his car-salesman charm and "sold" PM into coming here, but I think if Peyton percieved Fox as a weak or lame-duck coach(like AZ & Miami maybe), he goes elsewhere.

To sum it up, just consider that just about 2 1/2 yrs ago, the team was in shambles and the laughing-stock of the league. Elway took over the team and drew up a 3 yr plan to be a SB contender. Well, now they are easily a contender and one of the elite teams in the NFL.

Pretty much:
McD = Dictator / Fox = Delegator
McD = Aggressive / Fox = Conservative
McD = Offensive / Fox = Defensive
McD = Cerebral / Fox = Instinctual
McD = No personality / Fox = A guy's guy

People keep trying to push that line, yet all the available evidence points to the contrary.

Well define smart. McDaniels has an elite knowledge of the game - that's what got him the HC gig (that and Matt Cassel)... of course that doesn't necessarily translate into being able to make good personnel decisions, something he might have been the worst in the league in the last decade at.

Also, 2010 was a pretty good draft...

I'm not defending the guy. He was a terrible HC, but he does have the booksmarts.
