Yup... you are right. He is a specialist, but one that is on the field all the downs. Does he suck at stopping the run! You bet!!! But he was paid the big buck to be a headhunter, not the other way around.

More afraid of a team like the Pats getting his hands on him. Imagine him playing in a hybrid 4-3, 3-4 defense. Would never be off the field, and would solve their long time search for a pass rush.

Dwight Freeney was once the highest paid defensive player. That gave him that contract knowing he sucked balls against the run. But teams pay the big buck for headhunters. Just look up the franchise # for DE this year. You think Doom wouldn't get that from other teams? If we low ball him, he is out.

Dumervil's issues against the run are massively overblown. It's not a great strength of his, but he isn't completely incompetent at it either.

Broncos | Exchange proposals with Elvis Dumervil's agent
Sat, 09 Mar 2013 10:55:40 -0800 Marty Magid, agent for Denver Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil, said he has exchange restructured contract proposals with the Broncos and is waiting to hear back from the team. Dumervil is hoping for a resolution sooner rather than later. Read more: http://www.kffl.com/hotw/NFL?page=0#ixzz2N4gUBv00 |

We are obviously looking to increase cap room yet DUI Williams and Joe Mays are still employed. Gotta be a few million in savings if we dumped those 2 now.

If you paid attention to Dumervil this past season, he did not struggle at all against the run. He led our defensive linemen in snaps and played with good leverage as a run defender. It's just easy to say he gets destroyed against run because you don't pay attention and then assume things based on his size.
Here you can listen to Tom Nalen and Mark Schlereth discussing Dumervil's contract situation and both compliment Dumervil's performance against the run this past season. http://stationcaster.com/player_skin...=737&f=1164581 Jack Del Rio also praised Dumervil's run defense. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci...ayed-by-denver Quote:

Why wouldn't the Broncos have cut Mays and DJ already...at least to give them a chance to sign somewhere at the start of free agency?

According to spotrac, we would have 4.869 mm in dead money if we cut Doom. It would free up $8.754 mm of cap space.

Thanks my friend. I hope we don't cut Doom. James Harrison cut; Boldin and Dumervil likely to follow IAOFM

If we cut him it won't be a cap move, it'll be a money move. Don't expect us to use that extra cap space.

Thats one move I don't think anyone would understand. Elway took us from a 4-12 team to 13-3 and competing for the title in one year. Every move he made in free agency and additions were a huge success. If he feels the need to improve Doom's contract or move him I'm down with it so long as he keeps building the team. Sitting on cap space with Manning's window closing would be stupid.

Let's say the Broncos add a couple mid-level players in Free Agency this year (Terrance Knighton and Antoine Cason) adding up to about $6.5M.
Even if Dumervil goes down to $8M per year (highly unlikely), the Broncos would roll into 2014 spending at the Salary Cap already (~$123M)...with Beadles, Walton, Decker, and Chris Harris going in to Free Agency...and possibly Von Miller needing a raise. To be able to keep those players in 2014, Peyton Manning is going to have to take a paycut, that's all there is to it. Either he wants to win a Superbowl or he doesn't. One thing is clear, the Broncos don't need to be gutting their roster of young talent the next couple years just to keep Manning on at $20M. No other QB's who want to win do that. Once Manning is gone, the Broncos will have to start from scratch in the draft all over again. Let me just say that paying Prater close to $4M per year was a very bad contract for the Broncos. Big mistake. They need to draft a kicker and cut Prater as quick as they can ($2.7M cap hit). He's one of the major reasons the Broncos lost in the playoffs anyway. |
