Spot on. This is a lateral and even backwards move if you consider the compensation they'll be giving up.

I hope KC sucks but, imo they can vastly improve if they get anything out of Smith. They are going from Cassell/Quinn hardly a high bar set here

They gave up the #2 second round pick plus a pick next year?

They essentially just drafted Alex Smith in the first round. Why would you do that?

Vastly improve off a two win season equals what? Five wins? Six wins?

Where does it leave them three years from now when they decide to cut ties with Smith and miss out on the players they could have drafted with him?

I'd have more respect for kc if they just took Geno Smith with the #1 pick. This really is a stupid move. If they want Alex Smith, fine. But you don't give up the #34 pick, and a conditional to get him.

You give up maybe a 4th round pick but more like a 5th. Then you draft a QB in the first two rounds of this coming draft.

There's other vets that can come in and do what Alex Smith does and they wouldn't cost anything in trades. They could have brought in Matt Moore, paid him $7m a year for a few years and be just as good. Plus, they could be developing another QB... head scratcher.

But I think this is a case where HC just thinks he's smarter than everyone else. It happens...

Vintage kFc move, shades of Steve Bono!

Because they all think they are one player away from greatness, even though they need a new OL, couple DT's, Couple WR's, A safety, a CB or 2 among other things.

Fact is their D let them down just as much as their poor QB play did last year. It was ultimate team fail. Grabbing a game manger who protects the ball in a dink and dunk system is just going to bring D's up to the line and put more guys in the box. I bet this hurts Charles more than helps him. They have no deep threats and Smith is not known as a deep passer.

I am so glad kFc made this move because:
1) They gave up way too much for him
2) The Steve Bono/Montana connection
3) They lost a high second round pick that could have been an impact player.
4) They are going to draft a LT 1st over all and let Brandon walk which doesn't make them any better. They will tread water. I don't expect them to win more than 8 games, probably be closer to 6.

If kc lets Bowe walk then this will be super delicious icing on a cake-and-boobs type of cake.

Here are my real thoughts on this:

I think that Andy Reid can do a fine job identifying QB talent and developing it. He has been able to make some things happen with McNabb, Kolb, Vick, Foles, etc. and make it work. I just don't understand why they went for a QB who is marginal on the deep ball at best when it is a cornerstone of Reid's passing offense.

Furthermore, I do not see why they felt the need to trade a premier pick (which is what that early pick in the second round is) plus a conditional choice next year for Alex Smith. They must have not liked what they saw on tape from the rookie QB class this year. That is the only way I can see how they justify making this move. Weren't there better FA options? Why not nab a stop-gap there and draft a dude to develop this year if you are unwilling to burn your #1 on Geno, etc.?

KC is so full of fail.

Wasn't San Fran probably going to cut Alex Smith in a couple weeks anyways? He was due about $10M this year in San Fran.

Matt Cassel wasn't good enough, so they got Matt Cassel 1.5. Nice

Only thing that would make this better is if Geno goes to an NFC team like the Cardinals and just tears it up. And the 49ers get an impact player with that pick. And Alex Smith goes back to being pre-Harbaugh Alex Smith. Although that won't happen since Reid is a good QB coach.

Vontae Davis tweeted FA Sean Smith (CB, Miami) has been talking to KC and could go there.

they essentially traded 2 2nds for him. which is damn near multiple firsts for them since they were so bad this past season and likely won't improve a ton this year.
