Opening Day 1976 featured the return of Otis Armsstrong, but the anemic O Line and Steve Ramsey's bad QB play started us out at 0-1

We get to 1-1, with the biggest home victory in team history, still is by the way. John Ralston's Broncos 46 Lou Holtz's Jets 3.
![]() During this game, a key Jets executive suffered a heart attack at Mile High Stadium and died. True story. |

Rick Upchurch's 2 TD Punt Return game. The Red Orange jersey was the greatest jersey we ever wore! Broncos 44 Browns 13

Orange Crush shuts out the 3-0 Chargers, who led the NFL in all Offensive categories coming in.
Upchurch was sick! 92 yard return for his 3rd TD in 2 weeks. |

This is a very underrated game in Bronco history. This game served as a major thorn in the players, leading to the ouster of coach John Ralston. Ralston never really knew the Offense, and when Offensive Coordinator Max Coley took ill in the 2nd quarter, the Broncos were left with no one to call the Offense. Offensive Assistants had to try to call the plays and it was a debacle. Veteran players went to management, incredulous that their head coach could not call the Offensive game plan. This is the game where Alzado, watching from home, threw his crutch through his TV screen. Alzado was lost for the year on the first series in Cincinnati.

After a week 6 loss at home to Oakland to drop to 3-3, the Broncos traveled to Kansas City and won a shootout with the Chiefs 35-26. Upchurch scored for the 4th time in 7 games, as this was his only ever punt return TD on the road.

On Halloween day the Broncos were tied 6-6 heading to the 4th quarter at Oakland. But the Broncos O Line was no match for the D Line of the eventual champs. Broncos fell to 4-4.

After a blowout win over the expansion Bucs and the 2nd shutout of the Chargers, the Broncos moved to 7-4 with this win over the Giants. The 76 Giants were QB'd by Craig Morton, and after this game, Morton, who knew he was done in New York, had targeted a trade to the Broncos in his head. He just experienced first hand what a great Defense Denver head and thought they just needed some better leadershi at the QB position.

Great footage. Upchurch was so fun to watch on punt returns.
I forgot that Mile High still had the old east stands through the 76 season (you can see the newer movable east stands under construction at the start of this footage). |

A showdown game for the AFC Wild Card as the 8-3 Patriots squared away with the 7-4 Broncos. It was all but assured the winner of this game would get the AFC Wild Card spot.
It was a massacre, but it ended up being another historical loss. Down 31-0, numerous players spotted Steve Ramsey smiling coming off the field after an Interception. He was done as a Broncos QB, and would sit the bench the last two weeks. The Patriots were the surprise team in the NFL in 1976, and their rushing attack was the best in the NFL. The Phipps brothers took note and hired the Patriots Offensive Coordinator, to be our new head coach at seasons end. His name? Red Miller |

Rookie Craig Penrose started the last home game vs the Chiefs. The Broncos won their last two games including the season finale at Chicago to finish 9-5, their best ever record to date.

Speaking of the 1976 Giants, watch who roughs it up on the sideline after Morton completes a pass to Bob Tucker.

As you watch these next two clips, see how much the game has changed. Two punches and only one 15 yard hanky agau=inst the D. My, how the game has changed.

Another historical game from 1976. The season finale versus the Bears. Is this still a team rushing record? The Broncos ran for 356 yards in this season finale, with a best ever team record of 9-5. Otis Armstrong ran for 100+ yards and finished over 1,000 for the season. Norris Weese scrambled for over 100 yards as well. And Riley Odoms and Rick Upchurch both scored on end arounds/reverses. Cool footage.

Mile High was a religious experience back then for a grade school kid growing up in Co. We saw them play on Sunday and reenacted the game throughout the week on the playground taking turns on who got to be the heros in Orange.
Good times. Thanks B-Love. |
