Default Elway ranked 2nd among GM's

2. John Elway, Broncos

Last Year’s Ranking: 5

The pressure to keep the band together is never greater than after winning a championship. Why let anyone slip away from a core that just lifted the Lombardi? Alas, that’s what John Elway did 31 days after Super Bowl 50, waving goodbye as Brock Osweiler departed for a ludicrous four-year, $72 million offer from the Texans. Not that Elway didn’t want to keep the player he made the No. 57 overall pick of the 2012 draft. He simply deduced a quarterback with 305 career attempts who got benched only two and a half months earlier probably didn’t deserve to be one of the highest paid players in the league. Broncos fans can be nervous about losing their quarterback of the future, but they can’t debate Elway’s golden touch. A general manager who’s almost never botched a big decision — Peyton Manning, Von Miller, Aqib Talib, DeMarcus Ware, etc. — Elway’s reputation is fortified by the gems he’s found under the radar. Derek Wolfe as a second-round bargain. Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan as day-three picks. Chris Harris as an undrafted free agent. ILB Brandon Marshall as a scrap-heap afterthought. Emmanuel Sanders as a $15 million free agent who’s caught 177 passes in two years. Manning made Elway’s job easier, but Elway’s peerless player evaluation provided the Super Bowl sunset for Manning’s dead arm to ride off on.

Seems about right.

Well they are good year in and year out and know when to cut bait early, etc.

But still wonder if its more about having a HOF QB and being able to make risky moves.

that doesn't explain it at all. they have had a string of subpar drafts and underwhelming fa hauls. but they have Brady. as a coach, yeah, elite tier. as a gm? nah. at least not lately imo.

Belicheat is a great coach. I think #1 as GM is laughable.

His franchise has been a top contender for 15+ years. That in and of it itself speaks volumes about his abilities. If Elway keeps up his fantastic drafting and FA pickups then he will take over #1 in a few years, but until otherwise nobody has had the continued success that Billicheck has had.

Of course he is a cheater...

I love how this is finally getting called out... it took a few weeks for the media to sort of figure this out.

I used to think Belichick is underrated as a GM. Most saying he's average and I would argue he's better than average, though still flawed. New England's faithful would tell you this. Then I saw this list. What a joke.

Belichick is a bad GM but the coach allows him to overcome the issues at GM.
He is nowhere near the top 5. Damn sure not better than Elway, Thompson, Newsome, Schneider and whatever the **** the Bengals have going on.

Maybe Belichick is the best because they have the highest winning percentage in the NFL over the past 10 years?

Broncos are 7 BTW.

Welcome to the party, pals ... I been singin' dat tune for 10 years. He eventually grew into a fine coach/GM - smart roster management, thinks outside the box - he's pretty good now, at least when he plays by the rules.

But back in 2001:
  1. In Week 3, after Drew Bledsoe had lacerated his spleen or kidney, whatever ... Patriots were a bad 0-2, well on their way to their second losing season under BB, and his 6th losing season in 7 as a head coach.
  2. Out of necessity, Then Came Bundchen - who overcame the wilfork-worthy worst-ever combine 40 time 5.23 - to run off a 14-3 mark and their first-ever Super Bowl win.

Now, seeing 1 and 2, tell me how Belichick had anything to do with that run.

His coaching and Crybaby Tom are the reasons for that. His use of tight ends was a great move.. but how many years can you rest on those laurels. What brilliant team moves did he make the last few years that somehow secures him the #1 spot?

Elway turned this team around. How many division titles in a row? We just won a Super Bowl. Amazing.
