I think the play is dead in the NFL as soon as the block occurs. So no return (or 1 point safety) is possible

Yeah, this is a difference between NFL and NCAA rules. In the NCAA, on a PAT attempt, the ball can be advanced for points by the defending team if there is a change of possession (i.e. an intercepted two point attempt can be returned to the other end for two points by the defending team, or a blocked extra point attempt can be returned for ). In the NFL the play is dead as soon as the change of possession occurs.

The other thing that complicated it in my mind is that they may have still blown the call. When the first K-State defender got the ball he went back into the end zone then tried an illegal forward pass to another player, who was subsequently tackled.

Since the illegal forward pass happened in the end zone, it may have had the same result, but they didn't flag it even after review and discussion.

In following that I went on to read the NFL Rule book where they mentioned the only score that can occur after a TD is a one point PAT kick, a two point conversion attempt, or a 1 point safety. However, they go on to say that the play is immediately dead should the D stop a kick or recover the ball. So I do not see how a one point safety could occur.

Just saw this from Mike Pereira on Twitter:

In Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. Hoping for another 1point safety. Can happen in NFL too but only on a two point try attempt.
