Default Broncos deny Chargers permission to interview Matt Russell for GM spot

No San Diego Chargers. You can't have the guy that helped build the Broncos into a team that's been whipping you for the AFC West title the past two seasons.

The Chargers, seeking a general manager after firing A.J. Smith on Monday, sought permission from the Broncos on Monday to interview Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell. John Elway, the Broncos' executive vice president of football operations, talked to Russell about it and decided to decline the Chargers' permission.

"Matt's done a tremendous job with the Broncos and he's got a very bright future ahead of him," Elway said.

Matt Russell said he wasn't interested in ANY GM offers. He's happy to be where he is at right now.

Elway offered him the key to his own private bathroom.

Already been discussed here.

The Broncos did not block the Chargers. Russel just did not want to talk to them.

What is important in that story is that they reported that when Elway received the official request he conferred with Russel who advised that he wasn't interested. Only then did he reject the Chargers request. That's good management, in that Elway allowed Russel the opportunity to decide. Elway and the team could have just said no.

A good manager and leader will always empower their staff to better themselves, even if that means losing them to another organization, and in this case a rival.

Why not just let Russel say no directly?

Because its a way to publicly stick it to the Chargers, which is awesome. The team has to officially accept or reject the request. The staff member cannot talk to them until the request is granted. So by rejecting it there was nothing more Russel needed to say other than what he is quoted as saying.

It's good management and a great FU to the Chargers.

agree. but leaving an organization, even for a "higher" position, is not the only way to do that. that's what John has to strategize now, how to keep the administrative/coaching/scouting team together and improve it.

not just "well they had a better offer elsewhere".

Even better is Russell has told the team to deny all requests. He is staying in Denver.
