Default Looks Like PACs Don't Work

Sheldon Adelson popped for $53 mil, and backed eight losers.

Rove's groups spent about $400 million on losing campaigns. Maybe there is a big silver lining to Citizen's United after all. As they say about fools and their money...

Karl Rove’s Crossroads outfit is holding a phone call for its big donors Thursday to sum up the race, said Stan Hubbard, a Minnesota media mogul and mega-donor. “Obviously, somebody made a mistake and didn’t do things right. There’s no question about that,” he said.
Sounds like a fun day ahead for Karl!

Don't be so quick to write off SuperPACs - the Obama brand is huge and wealthy with PACs of its own.

Imagine them with an intelligent marketer (i.e. not Karl Rove.) Imagine them focusing on social media rather than TV.

Imagine their millions working against state and local candidates who have thousands.

These are people who like to make good investments, and I don't see them making the same mistake twice.

Yeah, but what was discovered in this election is that it was not the PAC money that carried Obama through. It was the grass roots network. Why? Because you can only hit up the big money guys once. When the going gets tough in mid-election (or in that last push) you can't go back to them again. This is the wall that Romney hit, as the majority of his money came from big donors. Grassroots money trickles in throughout the campaign and you can go back to small donors for more money. That ongoing liquidity is what is crucial. Building a broad base of small donors is critical to success. This is another area where the Obama campaign whooped Romney, who thought all he needed was a few deep-pocketed buddies. You know, his base.

Honestly, had Bill Clinton not saved Obama's ass at the convention, and had Romney demonstrated some semblance of principle or personality, it probably would have worked.

Comprehensive campaign finance reform will save our republic. If we continue down this path we're screwed.
