Default FB Position isn't dead

Look at what the Pats are doing with it.

Fox and Gase take notes.

GB and NO make prominent use of it as well. but when you have a QB who doesn't play under center, how much use can you get out of a FB?

You do realize that Manning is the reason that we don't have a fullback yes? I can't stand Fox, but that guy is as pro-fullback as they come.

They run enough plays under center to use a blocker in the backfield, you could use one out of the pistol as well

They don't care about running it. They say they do, but by now it's pretty obvious they don't right?

Key is having a guy getting through the whole and getting to the 2nd level. We run lame traps where JT doesn't want contact on. Pats run power traps as well and I saw single back runs with 3 wide on that opening 90 yard drive.

This is true. The 1st 2 drives today proved it is all about the passing stats

the key is having a team that is willing to commit itself to the run. Denver isn't one of those teams. the running game is treated as more of a nuisance

I hope the Broncos look at MyCole Pruitt in the draft. This guy plays TE/H-Back role for The Salukis. Splits out wide too, but has experience at FB and being moved around in the backfield to block and even make receptions. 1:10 is a play I'd like to see us do more often.

So sad when you think of what used to be. I remember the days when they said about the Broncos, "Just plug in a back and they get a thousand yards."

If only the rest of our team had worked like that back then.

We have defenders in the backfield so quickly, an extra blocker standing behind the QB is going to accomplish nothing.

That is what the blocker if for. Gives the RB a chance. CJ did well when they gave him a front to succeed behind. You can't expect to gain yards when you are only blocking 5 guys vs 7 or even 8.

You don't see fullbacks beating immediate penetration very often. They work best hitting a hole first. Problem still is there has to be a hole.

Or put another way, a good FB turns a 2 yard gain into a big gain. But he doesn't turn a blown up backfield into a 5 yarder.

I agree with you for the most part, but at the same time the lack of a FB on this team really does indicate our complete lack of dedication to having a strong running game.

Virgil Green is actually a good option at FB but he's always hurt so Denver keeps losing

Having only one good blocking TE who subs in at FB from time to time only serves to illustrate how little they are interested in having a strong running game.

I know YOU know this, but my comment is meant for the newbs. That gave rise to the old OM saying of "He can break off 2K, in our system." I would like to go back to those days...

I laughed out loud at the play-action they ran on those last few drives.

srsly, Denver ran the ball 9...NINE times and then they run play action at the end of that game. just like they did at the end of the Super Bowl

Fullbacks are often eschewed in high flying offenses because they offer little playmaking ability in the passing game. It's very common for pass-heavy spread offenses in college to more or less never use a fullback (though they usually have them on the roster as college rosters are huge compared to the NFL). In a lot of ways we are trying to do what those college teams do. Play almost exclusively from the shotgun with no fullback, and pass to set up the run. The issue is that when the pass game fails to click we have nothing going in the running department and can't adjust because we have no lead blocker on our roster to switch over to a more traditional I formation and try to get the run going to set up the pass.

The FB isn't some magical key to a great running game. It is just a typical on here that when the running game is struggling Denver needs a FB.
