Obama has learned his lesson and will do the same from here on out.

All last week's debate did was postpone the inevitable.

Facts are facts and math is math and a stylistic debater doesn't change any of that.

I like how the right has been underestimating Joe for this debate. He does have hoof in mouth disease at times, but he is a VERY strong debater. That's one of his strong suits. Folks didn't get a full picture of that in 2008 because he had to tread carefully with Palin, lest he come off as a big ol' meanie. He won't have that issue with Ryan. I think pretty boy is in for a rude awakening.

Eh, VP debates have almost no impact on the election. There's rarely even a bump for the winning side directly following a VP debate. So, I definitely don't expect tonight's debate to have much overall impact on the outcome of the election (save, of course, some sort of unprecendented meltdown from one of the candidates).

I agree. I'll watch it, but I don't think tonight means diddly **** on the overall scale, but I'd say the odds of Biden saying something incredibly stupid are about 30%.

As some national commentators have noted, a big part of the Romney bump has been a widening enthusiasm gap. Biden does have an opportunity to help with that, especially women. Plenty of material to work with on Ryan in regards to women's issues.

And, based on his DNC speech, Biden will likely hammer the blue collar, GM, middle class schtick a lot. Basically, he needs to get women, unions, minorities feeling uncomfortable about a Romney presidency again, not willing to give that nice guy in the Denver debate the benefit of the doubt.

Either way, while VP debate won't create a huge bump in one direction, it could stop (or continue) the current Romney momentum, IMO. Fewer people will watch, but media coverage will be significant, and the media's take on "who won" does a lot to sway polls.

Joe Dirt Biden will try to come across as one of the good ol' boys

A lot of my Republican friends think Ryan is going win this because Biden has been Obama's Dan Quayle. Not so. Biden is very charming and charismatic. He does put his foot in his mouth, but I think if Ryan comes out trying to show off what a policy wonk/numbers guru he is, he could come across as too professorial, cold and antagonistic.

I don't agree Biden should start attacking. Right now the campaign looks desparate with the Big Bird fiasco right after a horrid debate performance. The Dems want to "hit back" but I think the smart play would be to calm things and reestablish some semblence of normalcy. If I'm Biden, I turn on that million dollar smile say a few things to get the younger, less-experienced Ryan riled up (because he has the numbers to argue his points) and then just try to appear as the calm, rational one while Ryan chases his tail.

If I'm Ryan, I don't let Biden draw me in. I go with a minimalist approach and then layer in my intricate knowledge of policy, statistics and data in a minimal approach. I would try to showcase my youth, energy and excitement toward addressing the concerns of the economy in an optimistic way and try and paint Biden as "old hat."

This is going to be another fun one to watch. I expect Biden to do well.

Given Obama's listless performance in the first debate, I think this particular VP debate carries a little bit more importance. It's pretty clear that the Romney campaign is trying to embark on a wholesale narrative shift to paint him as sort of a moderate. It will be interesting to see if Ryan continues that strategy, or if Grampa Joe can get him to defensive about policy specifics.

Read the article. It's in Time Magazine and it's light-hearted piece. It's supposed to be silly. It honestly reminded me of Ed Hochuli - serious brainy guy who likes to hit the gym pretty hard.

Agree. Biden doesn't want to come across as an attack dog that's overcompensating for Obama's poor performance. Ryan doesn't want to come across as a strictly analytical and dry bean counter. What will make the debate fun is if they both do what they shouldn't.

Biden doesn't want to get overly aggressive if Ryan tries to tact to the middle on policy issues. Like Kahn was saying, regardless of if you agree with his policies or not, Biden has a likeable quality to him. He completely negates that if he hammers Ryan. It will come across as desperate.

Ryan doesn't want to come across like the guy reading policy specifics off of a PowerPoint at a hotel conference center business meeting.

Exactly. There are a lot of people on the left who want to see a "big comeback" but I think that's the wrong approach and frankly the wrong place to expect it. You want Obama to fireback for himself in his next debate. If Biden comes out rabid, it will make Obama, who came off as weak and listless in the last debate, as even weaker because it would look like he needs his VP to defend him. Worse, it would negate Biden's biggest asset, which is his charm and warmth.

I seriously doubt Biden goes that way, despite what the OP is suggesting. He's an elder statesman, and this isn't his first rodeo. I think he knows what he's good at and isn't going to do anything except be himself. We shall see, though.

I think Ryan's biggest play is to showcase optimism, energy and then get into just enough specifics on the plan to show he knows what he's talking about, has a clear vision, but not so much that he looks like a know-it all. Excercising restraint will be a big factor.
