Default Does Doom need a slumpbuster?

It worked for Mark Grace back in the day. I'm sure they could be found on Colfax Street (am i right locals?).

No seriously, WTF is his problem? Obviously, we've all noticed the general lack of burst. And yes, while he was playing against top pick Sam Baker (and getting owned by him), Max Starks last week wasn't exactly a world beater. Outside of that drive where Doom got back to back pressures that forced a PIT FG in the Red Zone, he hasn't done much in two games. Even on the few occasions he got close tonight, not only did Ryan slither away, but he outran Doom and got first downs. WTF.

What solutions, if any, are there to this problem?

We can't win with Von having to do all the heavy lifting and Methwolfe being forced inside to DT is taking away some of his juice.

Holding is part of the issue, yes, but Von has been held too (numerous times) and he has still gotten through and wrecked alot of stuff (not just in pass game, run as well). Doom doesn't seem to be coming close all that often.

He is getting held, they haven't called it once. They need to call it once or twice a game to keep the T honest, but the T will do it all game if nothing is getting called.

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it here... I'm no expert but I'm wondering if it has anything to do with his technique that he's forced to play. Dumervil has been great against the run this season and has made almost all the tackles in his direction and has shown great improvement in shedding the blocker (on running plays).

I've noticed that when he rushes the passer, he just tries to bullrush in a straight line, he doesn't try to beat him with a burst to the side or anything... just a straight up bull rush everytime.

Von Miller is on another level... he sheds blocks before the blocker can even get engaged.

Agree that Dumverville has been a non-factor in both games. And for the most part, he's getting owned in 1-on-1 situations -- teams aren't evening doubling him.

My theory is that his conditioning is lacking (he stays in Miami in the off-season and works out on his own, doesn't he), and that he'll probably pick it up in the latter part of the season as he rounds into shape.

Anyway, in the spirit of Boob Mojo, here's a slumpbuster for Elvis:

What most people seem to forget is that Doom is a speed rushing specialist. He's not a pure pass rusher with a handful of different moves. His play against the run has improved but if he's not getting the best of the tackle with a speed rush, he's not really going to do much else besides that bull rush and push the tackle back a few yards. He's not big or strong enough to do a Reggie White slap move or the bull rush and disengage with 1 hand to reach out to slap balls or grab jersey. His best chance is a spin move to take advantage of his speed but I just don't see him going to it.

Could always trade for Freeney.

Sure he's injured, expensive and aging but...nevermind.

He's getting his fair share of chips but this certainly IS below standard for him.

Still, it's only two games. Let's see how this pans out with some more time.

Might also be worth noting that the ONLY move I saw him use yesterday was a bullrush...

He's seeing double teams and his run defense is like 5 times better. There is also a defensive tackle issue. None of them command a double team.

He's holding his own in run defense.

Falcons did a good job with a lot of fairly quick passes that negated the rush.

He needs to use more moves he is not using his speed to the outside. Do something different, Del Rio needs to put him and Von on the same side of the formation

Maybe this guy shouldnt be a top 5 paid guy if he has a limited skill set? Heck when they resigned him, he still had yet to show that he could play against the run. Paid way too much for him. Good player, shouldnt be getting top 5 money, and I've always been a huge Elvis fan.

Yeah I was going to mention that. He has a lot more moves in repertoire but it was certainly very pedestrian effort. I know Del rio likes his guys playing straight up, but I'd like to see more stunting.

And that chick is gross. You can see where her arm fat hid the spray tan and created the zeebraing effect on her wrist.

A mighty slump requires a mighty slumpbuster.

Dumervil hasn't made much of an impact so far, but c'mon....we're talking about two games here. To judge from the reaction of the board, you'd think we were 10 games into the season. Pass rushers in general are streaky. Last season Doom didn't have a single sack through the first 7 games of the season, then had 9.5 in the final 9 games. A big game is just around the corner.

Part of that was because he was dinged up early in the season.

That's true, but the point still stands. Two games hardly constitutes a slump, particularly given the streaky nature of pass rushers.

Doom played effectively in the first game.

He had multiple hurries and forced Ben out of the pocket as well as hurrying his throws. He looked good week 1.

I haven't had a chance to rewatch the Steelers game so can't say what happened there.

Change "yesterday" to "all season."

I think he is doing what he is being asked to do by Del Rio. It is really helping our run D, but I would like to just let him loose in obvious passing downs. He is working realy hard but his bullrush is like pushing a sled every down, then he is being asked to "cut loose" and rush the passer when he is already muscularly spent.

Unfortunately, he is being misused (contract wise) and will be easily replaceable in this system.

Elvis made his living by speed around the corner, and his shoulder dip. He isn't even trying that move so far (in the first two games), so his assignments must be very different. Can't complain overall with his performance, but I think they should let Ayers do the early down sled pushing, then bring in Elvis on third downs to do what he does best.
