Default ESPN buys rights to the US Open tennis tournament!

This news brings me all kinds of happiness!

Don't get me wrong. I don't even like tennis. I'm not judging you, if you do - each to his own. But the last time I watched a match in tennis (you call it a match, right?), one of the participants was Bjorn Borg. That's a long time ago.

Maybe it's my complete lack of tennis interest that's caused me all kinds of irritation when NFL opening Sunday rolls around (the greatest day of the year in sports, IMO), and the Broncos are relegated to an early game on the road. CBS has had the US Open since 1968. When CBS reacquired the rights to NFL football in 1998, they got the NFL to agree to work with them to avoid having AFC teams play at home in the afternoon slot on opening Sunday.

The Broncos occasionally dodge the bullet by getting a prime time game on opening weekend. But especially as we've been relatively uncompetitive at times over the last fifteen years, more often than not, we've ended up with with an east coast game. Here are some of these "highly anticipated" openers:

2000 - at St. Louis (L) - (This Griese kid reminds me a lot of Joe Montana!)
2003 - at Cincinnati (W)
2005 - at Miami (L) - (Temperature at kickoff was 160° with 145% humidity.)
2006 - at St. Louis (L) - (Jeff Wilkins 18; the Denver Broncos 10)
2007 - at Buffalo (W) - (Toro! Toro!)
2009 - at Cincinnati - ("STOKLEY! DOWN THE SIDELINE! STOKLEY! CAN THEY CATCH HIM? STOKLEY! WOWWWWW!)
2010 - at Jacksonville - (Temperature at kickoff was 151° with 120% humidity - and our record in Florida is 0-147)

It's actually not as bad as I remember it being, now that I look at it. I guess it's more the principle of the matter - getting pushed aside by a sport that's slightly less popular than soccer in the US - at least since McEnroe and Connors retired.

Anyway, no more! How often do we get to say, "Thanks, ESPN?"

ESPN, USTA Sign 11-Year Deal Worth More Than $770M To Put U.S. Open Solely On Cable

ESPN and the USTA signed an 11-year deal worth more than $770M for rights to the entire U.S. Open tennis tournament. The two groups scheduled a press conference for this afternoon to announce the deal, which starts in '15.

Ahh I didn't really care about opening on the road week 1. You have to play 8 away games regardless.

In fairness, this issue has irritated me for more than half of my adult life. I had some pent-up feelings that I had to get out!

strategically speaking opening on the road is an advantage. it's like having a bye week before an away game. much tougher to travel and prepare for an away game in less than seven days

Sounds like you need a cold glass of BAZI. It relaxes you and keeps your mind at ease. All you need is a supply and then 3 friends. You in?

Any football fan should applaud this, we finally can get a CBS doubleheader on opening weekend.

When I hear people talking about watching Tennis, Golf, or college sports I realize that despite all the time I have wasted in my life at least I haven't wasted it on those things!

BTW I do realize this thread is about us possibly getting more home opening games.

This is good news. A bronco opener at home on Sunday afternoon hasn't happened in years - now with this switch it's a possibility. The home opener just isn't the same when it happens on the 2nd week.
