Default POE: a bust??

Dontari Poe has 'a ways to go' for Chiefs, coach says

When a team drafts a player at No. 11 overall, there are certain expectations. The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to lower the expectations for defensive tackle Dontari Poe.

The Memphis product hasn't received a ton of reps early in training camp. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel recently was asked what Poe needs to work on to get on the field more.

"A lot," Crennel said. "He needs to work on technique, he needs to work on understanding the system, he needs to get the calls correct all the time. He's got a ways to go."

This isn't just coach speak. The Chiefs would love Poe to start. A second-year undrafted player named Anthony Toribio, who spent last year on the practice squad, currently is lined up as a starter. Poe is getting snaps in some passing situations.

Poe told the Kansas City Star that he has struggled to adjust to his new nose tackle spot.

"It's all different," he said. "The technique of it, there's nothing the same about the college level. The only thing the same is that it's football. As far as the speed level and the strength and all that, you've got to learn it all."

We love the young Chiefs defense, but the interior defensive line could be a weakness. Poe is the guy who's supposed to help them there, and he doesn't sound ready.

I am so glad KC drafted him. I remember many people had him falling to Denver. This guy is your typical workout warrior. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.

He underachieved in college becoming invisible at Memphis must be tough for any 1st round draft pick, but boy does he look good in shorts!!!

Dorsey and him will make a great team.....LMAO!!!

I remember one draft analysys of Poe was that he was this huge workout guy but he had these short arms which is great for a bench press but he was easily handled by the OL because of his shorter arms. He was very underwhelming at Memphis I just find it hard to believe NFL people do not see this.

I remember the Broncos being high on him as well.

KCstud thinks he's a pro bowler already. I laugh at their demise.

Well, outside of Doom our track record isn't great either.

Pryce? You could argue that Miller is a hybrid player as well since most of his sacks will come with him on the DLine. Also it's not like Denver has as many top 5 picks as KC to throw at the top DL talent.

Well, at least he knows the learning curve. If he was a Bronco people would be saying "DL guys need three years to learn the game." I'm sure there was a lot of people on this board wanted Poe on the team, and apparently the FO wanted Poe also.

eh, outside of Suh most DT's take a good while to turn it on and become really good.
of course, him struggling to make a impact on the depth chart at all is wildly alarming.

A rookie having a long way to go in his first training camp? Yep that definitely means he's a bust

Poe will have less than 75 tackles and 5 sacks in his NFL career.

This.

The guy had a new defensive coordinator every year. Romeo knew he'd have to start from the ground up on his technique.

His main focus this year is getting a pass rush up the middle. Romeo's said his run stopping technique needs a lot of work.

Players selected that high are expected to contribute sooner rather than later.

Well it's safe to assume you've never been to CP before based on this sentence.

NT's take time. Look at the past 1st round NT's. They didn't start a lot of games or have big stats in their rookie seasons either.
