Default Why didn't we think of that? Pats convert Spencer Larsen to Fullback!

I thought this was funny.

Josh McDaniels and Bill Belichick are JEENIOUSES! According to the Boston Herald, they've converted Spencer Larsen to FULLBACK!

I can't help but think he would still be playing here if we had been smart enough to have played him at Fullback. Heck, I bet he could have played Special Teams, too!

Spencer Larsen found his mission in life

FOXBORO — The NFL lifestyle is a stark contrast to what Spencer Larsen experienced a few years ago.

Larsen served a Mormon mission in Chile from 2003-05, and the fullback said yesterday it was a life-altering experience.

“I remember getting into a place that had no running water, very little electricity,” Larsen said. “People just had nothing, and you come in there and people are so appreciative that you’re there teaching them. You know they have no money, and they put a full meal on the table that probably cost them their whole week of money, and they’re not eating. They’re giving it to you. It just puts things in perspective.

“It was much harder coming home (with) the culture shock of coming back to the States, how everybody has so much. It was tough getting there and seeing how little they had, but coming back was an adjustment.”

Larsen was a productive linebacker as a freshman at Arizona during the 2002 season, but had to fulfill his religious obligation to serve a mission as a 19-year-old. Larsen filed his papers with the Mormon Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, and he received a call to report to Provo, Utah, to learn Spanish for two months before shipping off to southern Chile for 22 months.

That’s where Larsen joined a community of 130 missionaries who knocked on doors and met with locals to discuss their beliefs. They worked from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day.

“You get a chance to be a leader,” Larsen said, “and it’s a huge growing process for those two years.”

As Larsen said, his great adjustment occurred when he returned home to Arizona, both as a person and a football player. After working himself back into shape, he tore his ACL during his second day of practice.

But he had gained a better perspective due to his mission. He closed out his Arizona career as a first-team All-Pac-10 selection and was drafted in 2008 by the Broncos in the sixth round. He has since made the transition to fullback during his second stint with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

And when he’s a little sore or beat up during the long days of training camp, Larsen just thinks back to his time working with the less fortunate in Chile.

It’s become an easy way for him to keep a strong attitude.

“You feel like, ‘Wow.’ You’re just struck with how fortunate we are here,” Larsen said. “I try not to take things for granted thanks to that experience.”

If they're really smart, they'll have him play both in the same game.

Broncos rookie Larsen starts at FB, LB, on special teams vs. FalconsUpdated: November 16, 2008, 5:45 PM ETAssociated Press Recommend1Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintATLANTA -- Spencer Larsen made history in his first NFL start.

Larsen, a rookie, became the first Denver player to start on offense and defense in the same game when he opened Sunday's matchup against Atlanta as the team's middle linebacker and fullback. He also opened the game on special teams, too.

Larsen's role as a two-way starter on offense and defense was a secret this week.

Denver coach Mike Shanahan told reporters after the 24-20 win over the Falcons he closed practice about 30 minutes early each day this week because "I can't trust you guys in Denver."

Larsen said he was told Monday he would play linebacker this week, but he said even he was surprised to also start on offense.

"I didn't think I would play much fullback," Larsen said.

He said he had to remain quiet about his practice time at linebacker.

"They needed me on defense," Larsen said. "We were real quiet about it. I was real excited about it, but I was able to keep my cool. It was fun and challenging. At fullback, you really know what to do, but at linebacker, it's a different world."

Larsen was third on the team with seven tackles. He didn't have a carry or a catch at fullback.

He also played on Denver's kickoff coverage and kickoff return teams.

Larsen said "it's great" to make Broncos history.

"I think it is cool," he said. "It's a great experience and I credit the coaches for allowing me to do it. I think it's just the type of coaching staff that we have. [Shanahan] is always looking out for his players and he knew that would be fun for me. It's great for him to allow me to do that."

Larsen is the first NFL player to start on offense and defense since Dec. 14, 2003, when Baltimore's Orlando Brown started at offensive tackle and defensive tackle at Oakland.

A sixth-round draft pick from Arizona, Larsen worked at linebacker and fullback in training camp before becoming a full-time fullback behind starter Peyton Hillis.

"I didn't think I'd ever play linebacker," Larsen said. "I thought I'd be able to contribute a little bit at fullback."

Injuries at linebacker and running back forced Shanahan to devise the plan for Larsen's two-way duty.

Hillis moved from fullback to start at running back as Selvin Young was held out with a groin injury. That created the opening for Larsen at fullback.

Denver quarterback Jay Cutler said "it was fun" to watch Larsen and Hillis move into new roles.

"They're football players," Cutler said. "I think he and Spencer are kind of in the same mold. They can do anything out there, special teams, offense or defense."

Larsen was needed on defense as starting linebackers Nate Webster and D.J. Williams were held out with knee injuries. Boss Bailey, the team's other starter, went on IR two weeks ago with a knee injury

This video represents Khan's interview of Spencer Larsen. Khan is Chris Farley (two Chrises!); Jeff Daniels is Spencer Larsen.

"Remember that one time, when you started that one game on offense and defense, and you were, like, the only person ever to do that, and you even played special teams, and everyone was talking about you? And Chris Berman called you, like, 'SPENCER STORMIN' MORMON LARSEN?'"

"Yeah, I, um, remember that."

"That was really, really cool. And you know how you're, like, Mormon, and you served a mission, and stuff?"

"Yeah, I guess I know about that."

"That's awesome!"

"Don't you want to ask me about last week's game?"

"Oh, yeah - I'M SO STUPID! MAN! WHY CAN'T I JUST GET THIS RIGHT?"
