Default Team Captains

Gutless posted this in a different thread, but I feel it strongly deserves its own discussion topic as it not illustrates the value of FA acquisitions not only punctuated with Manning, but through Ware and Knighton too along with the growth of Demaryius's influence within the team.

Personally, I think most note-worthy is that with how powerful and deep this team is on paper, these are the five players who will determine the direction of the team and whether they flounder or write history.

Anyway, big congratulations and much respect to Manning, Bruton, Ware, Knighton and Demaryius:

Leadership varies, coming in different sizes and voices.

The Broncos provided an example on Monday, naming their five captains. As voted on by the players, the holdovers were quarterback Peyton Manning and free safety/special teams ace David Bruton. Of more interest were the new faces: defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, defensive end DeMarcus Ware and receiver Demaryius Thomas.

Knighton impacts those around him through humor and candor. Watching him during warmups and at practice, its no surprise that he was named captain. Teammates gravitate toward him, listen to him. He has the ability to be an icebreaker, unafraid to tackle difficult topics or address tough issues with teammates.

If its an awkward situation or awkward conversation, they know I am going to speak my mind, said Knighton, who was last a captain his senior year at Temple. Thats my personality. Once you have that C on your jersey, you are almost obligated to do the right thing.

Thomas admitted that the honor caught him off guard. If for no other reason, hes the strong silent type. Teammates recognized his work ethic.

I dont know if you all really know, but I dont really talk much in front of the team, Thomas said. I like to lead by example. But I feel like Ive got a bigger role, so I have got to figure out what I am going to do. I believe I will be fine.

Wares selection came as no surprise. He functions as a coach on the field, and brings a professionalism and focus thats impossible to miss.

These guys have shown the work ethic, shown the way they deal with their teammates and shown their leadership ability over the last three-and-half, four months, coach John Fox said. A lot of them have made immediate impacts. A guy like DeMarcus. And Demaryius, youve seen his growth. Its kind of fun to see. I feel good about who the players voted for.

Manning and Benson are no surprise. I guess Ware is obvious and Pot Roast is logical. I am as surprised as Demaryius was at his own selection. I would have thought an offensive lineman would have been selected like Clady or Man ram.

Hope we can keep Knighton, grown into a team-leader and HUGE fan favorite.

Ware, Manning, Bruton arent surprises.

Guess DT is a surprise, but he's like Champ in leading by example.

I'm guessing this just made Knighton and DT that much more expensive.

Good to hear the Golden Domer Barster got C. I am liking the leadership from the top down. Fox is OK also I guess.

Demaryius? That's sort of strange. Popularity thing I guess. No O-line?

Probably, but DT isn't going anywhere. Knighton might be too expensive though, depending on his performance this year and how important the FO considers him to be compared to Harris and Franklin. We're gonna lose 1, very possibly 2 of those 3. Also not sure that we're guaranteed to resign Julius by any stretch

DT will cost bank regardless.

Knighton might have gotten more expensive nothing extreme.

Some very tough decisions for the FO this offseason with contracts though.

It's kinda sad that Von ain't a captain because he should be the heart and soul of this defense. I'm not surprised by Ware being the team captain, I'm sure he's hungry for a championship but I am hoping his attitude, professionalism and drive rubs off on Von.

Sad? Pathetic, Von should be a no brainer captain.... If he weren't such a retard.

That's a solid group right there.

Of course health plays a factor, but this team has the makings of being very, very special.

I'm looking forward to Sunday. I've put last season behind me, and will enjoy this season immensely.

I would have liked that too. Manning is a shock, Brinton as usual, and expecting big things from Ware

Congrats to Damon Brufin on being special teams captain for the second year in a row -- if only he could play the safety spot worth a damn!
