Default NFL to experiment with moving the goalposts closer together

Just heard on Fox Sunday pre-game show. They will move the goal posts from 19'4" to 18' at the Pro Bowl. The width between the goal posts hasn't been changed since 1920.

Thoughts?

And obligatory John Fox clapping.

Do you want kickers to decide more games??...because that's how you get kickers to decide more games

Not if it makes teams go for it more on 4th down.

If it hasn't been changed since 1920 then we shouldn't be hosing with it now.

Maybe they should have the goal posts different at each stadium and even the 2 posts there set to a different size so if you won the toss you could pick the larger width to kick to at the end of the game. Kind of like how each MLB stadium is different. Go big or leave it alone!

About time. Too many FGs are automatic anymore.

exactly.

it's like Congress passing legislation just to justify their existence, and usually causing all sorts of unintended consequences.

If we don't want field goals to be so automatic just have McManus kick for everyone.

Why not just move it 5" to the right and give McManus a better chance to make FG's next year?

I don't mind them tinkering with anything if they think it will make it more exciting. It wasn't that long ago when coaches were happy with 75% on FG accuracy. Now if you aren't above 80%, you are fired.

All that said, I personally would rather have them move the extra point back to at least put some suspense in the PAT. It has become so mundane and automatic that this is an area that would benefit from some kind of change, even if it is a small change.

They're fine the way they are now. The only thing they need to do is put a basketball whoop on it and let players dunk the ball after scoring a TD.

The width of the goal posts hasn't been changed since the 1920's, but until the 1974 season the goal posts were on the goal line. Starting in 1974 they were put in the back of the end zone. So the NFL has tinkered with the goal posts before.

19 feet and 4 inches is an arbitrary and stupid width.

It is quite peculiar how close that bizarre ginger goodell's eyes are together.

Execution would be a very lenient solution for that man's horrible crimes.

They've been 18 feet 6 inches since 1920. If they were 19 feet 4 inches, McManus would have only missed one.

They should shrink it down to 5' and really make things interesting.

Never mind, this is stupid.

You should have to have a teammate stand in the endzone and make field goal posts with his fingers like in that table football game you used to play in high school where you flick the folder piece of paper. He also gets to move to help get the kick through.

If they do this, they should make each goalpost a leg lamp with fishnet stockings and a shade on top with tassels to show wind direction.

232"

232 is exactly how gay Rodger Goodell is on a scale of 0-100
