Default Memorial Day - Never Forget

Freedom is not free. Thank you to those that do their job, did their job, those that have given all, and a special thank you to their families who sacrifice so much.

"Standing Guard"

This Picture was taken at the National Cemetery in Minneapolis , MN on a cool morning - as it appeared in the Minneapolis Star/Tribune.

Have a great Memorial Day, everyone. A special thanks to those who's family members paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. This is your day and they will always be in our thoughts, our hearts, and our prayers.

Thanks to all veterans, past and present, and especially to my grandpa, who landed at Omaha Beach.

A special thanks to my uncle who fought with the 8th army in Korea and survived the battle for the Chosin reservoir. Also to my dad who is a veteran of the US Navy.

My husband's spending nearly the entire day today with the local American Legion, doing ceremonies to honor our veterans. Much respect to all who served.

Words cannot express my gratitude for the men and women who died for me and the freedom of all of us. Thank you so much. And thank to all of you who are still risking yourself everyday in the service of your country and the world.

I saw this years ago and had to dig it up to post it here today..

Today, we honor our country's soldiers. Since our nation's beginnings, young men and women have sacrificed their lives
in order to pave ours with peace and prosperity. The stories of their courage
are a continuous reminder of the American ideals that we've cherished for generations.

Just as those brave men and women fulfilled their sacred duty to their country,
we must fulfill our duty to them by never forgetting that our freedom is secured through their sacrifice.

Join me today in a moment of silence to honor those patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Heroism like theirs is the foundation our nation was built on,
and their sacrifice ensures that America will remain the land of opportunity and freedom for generations to come.
I will never forget their sacrifice.

What is the significance of the date of the American memorial day? I know the Canadian memorial day is november 11 (the date of the armistice that ended WWI). It doesn't to my knowledge correlate with any significant date like V day, the armistice, VE day.

Here is what I know. It started as a civil war remembrance day in the south i think. Eventually is started including all wars but was called decoration day. The reason it's now last monday in May was because in late 60's they passed the uniform holiday act? something like that to move certain holidays to be 3 day weekends lol. So not like you were wondering some big historical day.

So you are correct it doesn't correlate to any specific historical event.

The US also has Veteran's Day which does correspond to the armistice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Day). The difference is that Veteran's day celebrates the service of all military veterans while Memorial day is a day of remembering those who died while in service to their country
