Default ARMA 2 Day Z Mod - Best Zombie Apocalypse Simulation Ever

I'll probably be online tonight if any of you want to meet up.

Diablo III may have all the marketing and hype as far as the PC market is concerned, but I'll be damned if anything, Blizzard-developed or not, is going to keep me from playing more DayZ this week.

The zombie survival mod for Bohemia Interactive's military sim ArmA II has come out of nowhere to be one of the most interesting things to happen to PC gaming in 2012. What's most interesting, to me at least, is what it's done to the sales and profile of ArmA II, a very serious game and one that, while successful and prominent within a niche of PC gaming, is hardly what you'd call a mainstream smash.

It is. Well not if you're only into the Modern Warfare spray and pray fake type of game, but if you like realistic sandbox play, there's nothing like it.

I was creeping around at night on my belly with this dude I randomly met trying to avoid the zombies. It's PITCH black, we have to throw flares out 50 yds at a time and creep around the edge of the light trying to avoid them. We come across this farm house and decide to go inside. Immediately through the front door you hear the flies, the indicator that a survivor is surviving no longer. At the base of the stairs there's about 10 dead zombies surrounding 2 dead players. Upstairs was another dead player surrounded by a few zombies. This was all lit in red flare light. It was crazy, hard to explain how creepy it was.

I'm downloading it tonight. I have always thought a zombie based MMORPG would be amazing. The pvp aspect of survivors vs walkers would be sweet.

ARMA 2 can be had for free, but the expansion pack you need is $15 or so. It's not much.

Character models and movement suck, but the world looks very nice. Definitely looks like it might be fun, but my computer probably couldn't handle it.

The environmental graphics are actually amazing if you have a good rig. The character models are pretty basic though, agreed. The map is some 225 km2 in size, so you can't compare this game to console shooters. If you get spawned in the south and you want to move to the north side of the map to meet up with some friends, it can take you >hr to move through the zombie infested map, even if you know what you're doing.

I can't stop laughing at all those guys in sweater-vests pointing their guns at each other.

It's a lot harder now. The video above is from over a month ago. There are a hell of a lot more zombies now and they respawn as well, so you can't just clear them out. They keep coming and coming until you're out of ammo. The louder guns like the hunting rifle and lee enfield can't be used in towns or cities because they are so loud, the zombies will be alerted for a massive radius and you're ****ed. Those rifles have to be used out in the open spaces and woods between towns and cities to take out other players. There are silenced weapons, but they are extremely rare.
