Fla. prosecutor in Zimmerman case wins re-election
By AP Staff April 24, 2012 12:50 pm

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida prosecutor who charged George Zimmerman with second-degree murder is going to spend another four years in office.

Angela Corey on Friday won a new term after no one stepped forward to challenge the Republican in this year's election. Qualifying ended at noon.

Corey was first elected in 2008 as state attorney for the judicial circuit that includes Clay, Duval and Nassau counties in northeast Florida.

The 57-year-old prosecutor is known for her tough tactics, locking up criminals for long sentences and not negotiating easily on plea bargains.

Gov. Rick Scott appointed Corey in late March to oversee the investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin.

The governor named Corey after the local prosecutor for the central Florida county where the shooting happened, Norman Wolfinger, volunteered to recuse himself.
Guess we now know why he was charged, election time..

You realize most attorneys think he beats the chargers. It was probably a ploy to charge him with murder. I could see it get knocked down now that her election is over.

I agree. I was really surprised with 2nd degree murder. It's almost like DA wants him to walk? Think about it. You charge him with something you know you won't win. Then he walks and you say well we tried our best. Manslaughter would have been a lower burden of proof. You wouldn't have to prove he acted in malice. You could just say he was super negligent in handling the situation, his gun, and the result was a homicide.

Also I really think this Zimmerman guy probably not a ruthless person. Honestly the story of the guy beaten by the angry mob over telling kids to stop playing basketball is scarier. That shows what can happen to our society if racial tensions go violent. I don't really think Zimmerman a huge threat to society, but he needs to get something on record that keeps him from owning guns. He beats this outright and he can still carry one.

A lot of people think the LA Riots were because of the king verdict. But people who lived through it no different. What happened in So Calif, LA, was a war between the LAPD and the black communities who felt the Chief of Police, Daryl Gates treated them poorly. And you you know what he did. They woudln't even follow up on domestic violence when it was black on black. Then gates said maybe black people die more during a chokehold because of their anatomy. seriously he said that.

But then a little black girl was trying to steal juice or something from a liquor store. She was shot dead by the Asian owners and there was no charges filed. Then when the King verdicts came down it was the match that lit the flames.

Thats why i am so bummed about how Obama handles race relations. He's made them worst then ever. We need leaders that calm people down, not get them more riled up.

You watch, this thing is going to be a hornets nest when he gets acquitted. God willing no other big racial type incidents will happen in the mean time. But we already have some here and there. I sure wouldn't want to see civil disturbances all over.

Things like that set cities back big time.

apples & oranges, also you don't have to be a bad person to commit manslaughter. there are plenty of people yr in & yr out that get convicted & go to prison that are good people that happened to make one bad decision. he gets convicted & he won't be able to own a gun. where do you draw the line between who goes to jail for killing someone & doesn't go to jail for killing someone?

You draw the line right where it becomes self defense I guess. My point was more if they went for manslaughter and won, then he would not be able to own a gun. If you swing and miss on murder then he could still own one. I don't think this guy is a threat to society as far as being a killer goes. But he should lose his gun rights and do some time for manslaughter IMO. By going for murder they risk him being out very soon, with same gun, on the same streets. Although its likely he would move away etc etc.

It is apples and oranges in the sense the 2nd incident is scarier.

Also all the black kids and adults attacking whites and saying justice for Trayvon have got to the the dumbest most hateful people on the planet. How is that going to make things better. That just makes white people even more scared of groups of young black men. We all know how this end. In one huge race riot black people can't win.
