Default DT Ben Garland granted early release from the Air Force to play football.

Garland Granted New Opportunity
April 20th, 2012 - 2:06pm by Stuart Zaas

Broncos defensive lineman Ben Garland, who participated in the team’s training camp in 2010 before returning to the Air Force, has successfully applied to the Air Force’s Palace Chase program.

Defensive Line Coach Wayne Nunnely said he’s happy to have him back.

“His work ethic is outstanding,” Nunnely said. “And I told him this, if he is a representative of our Armed Forces, we are in great shape. Because he exemplifies all of the great qualities – the great work ethic, the great discipline, all those kinds of things that you want in people who are guarding our country. It’s those same attributes that you want in an athlete and he has all that. I don’t know in my 36 years of coaching if I’ve worked with anybody more disciplined, with such a great work ethic, than Ben.”

After two years of service, airmen that have the opportunity for a career that will benefit the Air Force in recruiting or public affairs can apply for the program, which grants them an early release.

Hopefully, Garland will have more of a Chad Hennings-type impact with us rather than a Steve Russ or Chris Gizzi career path.

I can't seem to find the article, but I read somewhere that he was working hard in the weight room over the last year and was up in the 290's.

Ya the air force likes to keep their men at a certain weight. They don't want any fatties. If he's already up in the 290s he should have no problem puttin on a bit more.

It will be great Ben Garland is the next Chad Hennings. I absolutely hated it when Dallas got Hennings. He was a solid DT and was on their SB winning teams.

I was worried about the lack of attention to DT in FA, but I get it now.

I like when people b**** about no moves and any move we do make. Sounds like the staff is happy about the news and I'm sure he is as good as McBean ever was.

There is no way he was up to 290, that above the Air Force Weight/Height standards

I thought weight/height standards could be waived if service member met body fat and physical fitness requirements?

This is really good news. He did really well in the brief period in camp a couple of years ago. Hard worker, great motor... could definitely be a really nice rotation guy up front (which we badly need).

Maybe they have changed but I don't think so. Max weight was around 250 for someone over 6'6'.

Remember the Marine Rulon Davis?

I remember the team raving about Rulon Davis's work ethic as well.

It was just a joke, dude. I have no reason to really be upset over any story like this and no reason not to hope the guy turns out to be a superstar.

I remember when he was competing in camp the first time and they were talking about him winning wind sprints and working his ass off nonstop.
