Default Broncos have hit and missed with recent top NFL draft choices

Broncos have hit and missed with recent top NFL draft choices

The Denver Post 04/19/2012 01:00:00 AM MDT

In Peyton Manning, the Broncos are trying to take the ultimate short cut. If Manning can play quarterback at the level he did before his neck injury, the Broncos can overcome some of their unfortunate draft picks of the past 11 seasons. Bad drafting is the primary reason the Broncos have only one playoff appearance and that was an 8-8 gift in 2011 in the past six seasons.

NFL teams identify rounds one, two and three as "starter" rounds. And in this segment, the Broncos have failed too many times going back to the 2001 season. Next week, the Broncos have the No. 25 pick in the first round. They need to find a player the caliber of D.J. Williams, not Jarvis Moss or Willie Middlebrooks.

The second round has been to the Broncos what a green-side bunker is to a golfer's approach hazardous. The Broncos' spectacular second-round whiff under the direction of Josh McDaniels in 2009 Alphonso Smith (strike one!), Darcel McBath (strike two!) and Richard Quinn (strike three!) is a major reason Manning's new supporting cast is not as strong as it could be.

The Broncos have had better luck in the third round, thanks to the recent hits of center J.D. Walton and wide receiver Eric Decker. But where have you gone, Maurice Clarett?

A look at the Broncos' draft picks in the first three rounds, dating to 2001:

First round

Very good: OT Ryan Clady (2008), LB Von Miller (2011).

Good: WR Demaryius Thomas (2010), LB D.J. Williams (2004).

Disappointments: RB Knowshon Moreno (2009), DE Jarvis Moss (2007), OT George Foster (2003), CB Willie Middlebrooks (2001).

OK: QB Tim Tebow (2010), DE Robert Ayers (2009), QB Jay Cutler (2006), WR Ashley Lelie (2002).

How is Cutler "OK" when we got a probowl berth and over 2x the ROI?

Yeah, I'm not a Cutler fan but he was certainly better than "OK". Hell, for that matter you could make Tebow better than "OK".

I think JD Walton can grow into a dominant center, but he sucks right now, so I don't know why they counted him as a 3rd round hit. Because he's starting and we have no one better right now? Oh yeah, that's inspiring.

And Cutler just Ok? Lol, I can't stand that douche of a frown cannon, but he's better than "Ok" maybe they're just talking about his time in the Broncos, even then it's better than "Ok".

Rounds one to three are typically starters for every team with the draft. The good teams can find sometimes instant starters, but normally impact players who eventually start throughout the draft and in UDFA. Everynow and again. The
Good scouting departments find a gem in the late round who becomes a stud.

Now if the plan to have three starters on this team from rounds 1-3, I only see a few positions this would happen..
UT, C, LG, WLB, Slot WR

Some that could use upgrading or future starters
RB, MLB, CB, NT, DE

Now if DJ Williams is suspended I would advocate a WLB with one of those 1-3 picks.. We all know UT is going to be another position addressed.. So outside of UT, I'm not sure where they go for impact starters? The C and Guard can be had 4-6 and still offer an upgrade so it makes more sense to upgrade those positions later from a value perspective. The good teams find starters in every round, or at least upgrades basing need with BPA...

I don't know, if Walton and Beadles are that bad you'd think EFX know it and would have made more of an effort to bring somebody in. But other than a token effort to sign Jeff Saturday they didn't. So they either don't think they're that bad or they have confidence that they'll improve this year.

Well, other than Peyton they didn't make much of an effort to bring anyone else in.

In what crazy ass clown world can you say that Ashley Lelie was "ok" but Moreno is a "disappointment"?

I'd say the single best way to grade early round success or failure is to A. ask if they're starting or a key rotational contributor and then B. if they have received/are expected to receive a second contract from the team.

Probably the world where you value people who start for your football team.

In defense of some of these drafts, the Broncos drafted for Need as opposed to drafting the BAP 'Best Available Player'. To me the only player that was not a Need or BAP and was a reach was TT.

Elway gets the draft. he told Leggy in the Post, Broncos will take best player available regardless of position. It's the smart thing to do.

Yep. Heard that too. What a relief. Hopefully the clamoring for 2nd round DT's at #25 will subside.

And thankfully so, now that we have Peyton Manning, we have more of a luxury to do so.

Legwold... reiterates that the team has interest in BSU runner Doug Martin and could see them taking Martin at #25 if the top defensive tackles are all gone at that point. In fact, that's exactly what he has them doing in his first-round mock.

Yeah this isn't even accurate. If "very good", "good", "OK" and "disappointment" are the grades here, it should look more like this:

Very good: Von Miller

Good: Jay Cutler, Tim Tebow, Ryan Clady

OK: Demaryius Thomas, DJ Williams, Robert Ayers, Ashley Lelie

Disappointment: Knowshon Moreno, Jarvis Moss, George Foster, Willie Middlebrooks

And that's without a "pretty much a total waste of a draft pick" category.

The issue ppl seem to forget is just because there are 32 picks in the 1st round does not mean there are 32 players with 1st round grades

I have no problem selecting the BPA who has a 2nd round grade becuase that might be all that is left at #25.

A Lamar Miller/Doug Martin at #25 is OK with me if he's the top ranked guy on their board even through he has a high 2nd round grade

Yeah I get the feeling like they were going to go BPA all along. But for some reason I get a feeling Doug Martin is going to be the first round pick.

Muscle Hamster is not, under any circumstance, one of the top 25 players in this draft.
