Default Collusion?

Free agency launched 24 days ago. The class included 42 restricted free agents.

And not a single one has been signed to an offer sheet.

Previously, the thinking was that restricted free agents would get sniffs after the unrestricted market dried up. That thinking arises in part from the fact, in past years, thatís exactly what happened.

So whatís happening this year? With the maximum compensation now reduced from a first-round and third-round pick to only a first-round pick and with the ďpoison pillĒ device dead and with nine of the 42 RFAís available with no compensation to the original team, itís surprising that no offer sheets have been signed. In fact, there have been few if any visits by restricted free agents to prospective employers.

The development comes at a time when many believed that Steelers receiver Mike Wallace and Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb would have been targeted by teams picking in the bottom of round one. And while time remains for signing a player to an offer sheet, thereís no indication that it will happen.

Given the suspected prevalence of collusion in the uncapped year of 2010, when restricted free agency expanded to include players with four years and five years of service and only running back Mike Bell changed teams, and in light of the recent Redskins/Cowboys cap penalties that tend to confirm collusion in 2010, itís hard not to at least wonder whether teams have decided, verbally and discreetly, not to pilfer players via restricted free agency.

Iím not saying thatís what has happened. But given that the teams were told, verbally and discreetly, not to take full advantage of the rules of the uncapped year in 2010, the rubber band already has been stretched that far. The question is whether the NFL currently is pulling both ends of it.

There's that and then there's the whole "colluding for what purpose" angle. What would colluding accomplish?

The truth is the salary equivalence and pick compensation is usually set at or slightly above what the player is worth to prevent another team from signing them, or at least get fair value if they do. Most teams know how to do this and that is why no one is overpaying.

the free agent class blows....

I know this because there hasn't been 1,001 threads that start with "sign him!" or "bring him in"...the OMane loves to sign guys at the drop of a hat and there's even been hesitancy here

What about the fact that the new CBA and rookie pay scale has made it a much less risky venture to bring in new young talent from the draft? It certainly makes some good financial sense to hit the draft first, then fill your holes before training camp. Gone are the days of $50 mil rookie signing bonuses and contract hold outs.

Nobody wants to give up a first round pick plus fifty million dollars for Mike Wallace? Collusion.

50 million isn't all that bad, he had 72 reception,1100+ yds recieving, 8 tds. calvin johnson had 96 rec. 1600 yds & 16 tds, he got an 8 yr 132 million dollar contract. 60 million in garuantees. based on production wallace is justified in asking for at least 65 million. this is not to say we make the trade cuz we need our 1st rd pick.but he is justified to ask for 50-65 million.

You are so right.... 10 million a year cap hit is shiat. Lets sign 12 players to our squad and call it a day.

Dumbass logic.

They don't take players because they don't want people doing it back. I absolutely think there's collusion. Who was the last big RFA to be signed away.. Welker? Maybe for the earlier rounds, no, it wouldn't be the best move under the new CBA but to think there's NOONE worthy of a sniff is silly. There's some players that won't even cost anything but a match option for the current team. The fact that every year, almost NO RFAs get a sniff anywhere while draft picks are thrown away in trades like they are show that it's not necessarily the pick that's holding teams up.

We gave a 4th for Maroney a few years ago, right? Is Hill not better than Maroney? Are we not in a more dire situation than we were then?

There's WRs in the league that wouldn't even dress for $10M a year and he's at least in the conversation with them in terms of skill. It's not chump change but it's not necessarily a bad value either.

ok moron, just because someone gets a 60 million dollar contract doesn't mean its all garuanteed. if the market dictates that is his value than that is what he'll get. I hate to break the news to you but great players, not saying wallace is a great player, are going to get big bucks that go against the cap. I would love for players to come to denver & say i'll play for vet minimum but it ain't gonna happen. did I say we should use up our cap paying everyone 10 million a year...no.

most would call it smart business practices..

I'd nevr give up a first for a WR not named Larry Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson, to many of them floating around that can be had for much less...

Unless you have NO ONE to throw to and they are going to get all of the throws every down all year..

Wallace a good WR but way to much money and a first? not happening if I'm GM..

Now talk about a stud DT that has penetration value, can not be moved on running plays and ZERO off the field issues I might be tempted..

I hear ya. But at the same time I think it's fair to consider whether or not you think you can do better than someone like Hill with a late 4th round pick. If not, it would make sense to take a look at making such a move.
