The #Chiefs and Alex Smith have agreed to a four-year, $68M contract extension with $45M in guarantees, a league source tells me.

Thoughts?

17 mil a year, wow.
I am not shocked they locked him up, but $45 million guaranteed seems stupid.

Excellent way to spend that money they saved by putting together one of the worst offensive lines in the league.

Smith will earn every penny running for his life.

These first reports always are inflated. They can probably release him after 2 years with no cap hit and the guarantees are probably for Injury after this year....A good bet for Smith with that O line though.

Alex isn't getting $17 million a year.

per Rotoworld..

Chiefs agreed to terms with QB Alex Smith on a four-year, $68 million extension through 2018.

Because Smith was owed $8 million in 2014, the deal is actually $76 million over five seasons -- a $15.2 million annual average -- with $45 million guaranteed. If you treat Andy Dalton's Bengals deal similarly, Smith is collecting roughly $1.3 million more per year, but is still well south of Jay Cutler and Joe Flacco money. Even with Smith's passing limitations considered, this seems like a fair deal for both sides. The Chiefs will continue to lean heavily on running back Jamaal Charles and a talented defensive front seven to carry them in games. Smith seemed to grow as a quarterback over the course of his first season under Andy Reid, posting career highs in passing touchdowns (23) and rushing (76-431-1). He became more willing to pull the trigger on tough throws as the year progressed. Smith, 30, is a low-ceiling QB2 in fantasy leagues and will probably remain that way for the rest of his career.

$15 million a year and an out after 2 years is a great deal for KC.

Peyton is getting $15 million this year, seems reasonable. Very comparible players.

Going rate for any average QB nowadays. I'm glad Chiefs didn't break the bank and pay him 90+ million.

$15 million average on this deal is fair. Luck, RG3 and Wilson will all be getting $24 million dollars a year deals next year or the year after with the cap rise.

Congrats! You won't be paying Alex Smith as much as Andrew Luck! I still see no Super Bowls in your future. Huzza!

And his playoff record is .500 like Tebow. How much is that guy getting paid again?

No kiddin' man.
They could've given him $50mil/yr for all I care...
The main point here is, Alex Smith will be a chief for awhile, making the chiefs a non-threat in the AFC West during that term...

And Peyton has 3 AFC titles, 5 MVP's, and a SB but yeah, same difference.

Incredibly useless trivia: If you add the number of touchdowns Manning threw in 2004 (49) with the number he through last year (55), it equals the total number Alex Smith has thrown in his entire eight year career (104).

Smith was a good fit for the 2013 Chiefs. This deal isn't going to look as good in 2014 and beyond with a crap offensive line and weakened defense.

Good point. Alex Smith is fantastic, worth every penny. The Chiefs are gonna be terrific! This sets them up for a dynasty.

I feel for Alex because obviously, he made and makes the Chiefs better. Some fans dont realize they havent drafted one decent QB since Todd Blackledge.

Since when was Todd Blackledge decent? 60.2 career passing rating.
