Ya Mort just said on NFL live that Chiefs are looking at QB with first pick. So if that happens, Smith is done and KCdud is wrong again, Smith wont win a playoff game as a Chief.

Derek Carr says teams tell him they’d like to pick him in the 20s

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 4, 2014, 7:47 PM EDT

Former Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr says teams are telling him they’d like to draft him somewhere with a pick in the 20s on Thursday night.

One team with a pick in the 20s in this year’s draft, Cleveland at No. 26, is reportedly interested in Carr. But the team that picks Carr might be a team that trades into the pick: According to John Clayton of ESPN, Carr says four or five teams have told him they would like to trade into the 20s to draft him.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see a team with a high second-round pick trade up into the 20s to take Carr there. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement makes drafting a player in the late first round preferable to the early second round in one key respect: First-round picks have fifth-year options on their contracts, whereas second-round picks become free agents after four years. That means that if Carr develops into a franchise quarterback, the team that drafts him gets an extra year before having to break the bank to lock him up with a long-term extension. (With Colin Kaepernick wanting $18 million a year or more on his next deal, San Francisco may wish it had traded up and taken him late in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft, instead of trading up to take him early in the second, so that it would have a fifth-year option on his rookie deal.)

Carr’s stock seems to be rising as the draft approaches, and there’s now a lot of talk that he’ll be drafted higher than former Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. There’s a good chance that after Johnny Manziel and Blake Bortles, Carr will be the third quarterback off the board, perhaps in the late first round.

Looks like trade down bait from our side.

He'll do a complete 180. Saying the future is in the draft pick and once they trade Smith he'll tell everyone that will listen how terrible he was and the Chiefs are better to be without him.

Or kc could draft Carr. It'd sure be interesting for Smith if kc said "screw it, let's take Carr". KC would have Smith, Bray and Carr with lots of upside in the younger QBs.

Nah, kc is too stupid to do that.

I wouldn't mind doing that, especially if Derek Carr is there. I think Reid and Dorsey earned trust by drafting QB's before that are successful.

If they think a QB is the next big thing then I'll be happy to go with that.

Wonder what he's asking for?

I've seen 14-17 mil a year discussed around, KC might be only offering 10-12 a year.

Maybe Smith needs to put his agent in check.

I'm sure there is some truth to the negotiations with Smith. At the same time, think it is more about KC trying to put pressure on Smith to take the deal. Can't imagine KC honestly wants to rebuild at the QB position. You don't give up two 2nd round picks and then about a year later, decide to spend a 1st round pick on a QB.

If I am Smith and his agent, I'm not blinking here. I want a Jay Cutler like deal, and if I don't get it in KC, I'll get it elsewhere.

I don't want the chiefs taking Carr. They need to keep their game manager.

Man I would love KC to lock up Alex Smith long term almost as much as I would love to see Jerry Jones give up a couple of firsts and a second to move up for Johnny dumb @$$.

The last time the chiefs selected a QB in the first round? 1983 (Todd Blackridge), the same year as John Elway.

The chiefs will not draft a QB in the first, especially when they don't have a second round pick. They simply have too many holes to fill.

Would love to see the Chefs waste their first round pick on David Carr.

Please let this happen.

Yep, seems the hype is growing for Derek, just like it did for David.

Trade down, get more picks, build the team up.

Deepest draft in years with quality everywhere due to the record amount of talented underclassmen who have come out.

Ya they could since they don't have a 2nd rounder. But I like Carr and believe Cleveland will take him in the 20s.

Smith is way better than Carr. Carr only has a 30% completion percentage when under pressure. Also a huge portion of his passes were within 5 yards of the LOS if I remember right. All KC needs at better WR's and an OL.

Lol, everyone wants more picks this year. The Texans can't even unload their #1 pick. It's a bad year to not have all your picks. The Chefs could get a pretty nice player with their 2nd round pick, if only they had one.
