Arizona sheriff says Obama's birth certificate a "forgery"


(Reuters) - A tough-talking Arizona sheriff, already embroiled in a Justice Department bias investigation, waded deeper into controversy on Thursday with an assertion that a probe by his office found President Barack Obama's birth certificate was a forgery.

Most Republican critics of Obama have given up pursuing such widely discredited "birther" allegations. But the investigation by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, carried out by what he described as five-member volunteer "posse," was prompted by a request last August from a group of conservative Tea Party activists in the Phoenix area.

The White House has denied repeated claims that Obama was not born in the United States. In April 2011, Obama released a longer version of his birth certificate to try to put to rest speculation within some Republican circles that he was not born in the country as required by the U.S. Constitution to become president.

"A 6-month-long investigation conducted by my cold case posse has led me to believe there is probably cause to believe that President Barack Obama's long-form birth certificate ... is a computer-generated fraud," Arpaio told a news conference.

Arizona Democratic Party finance director Dan Mitchell later sent out an email seeking to parlay the sheriff's charges into cash donations for the party.

"Stop the ridiculous Tea Party, birther, GOP nonsense, click here to make a donation to the Democratic Party now," the message read.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt poked fun at Arpaio on Twitter, providing what he described as a link to a video feed of the news conference that instead directed readers to the opening credits of "The X-Files," a TV show about paranormal activity.

Arpaio, a conservative Republican who styles himself as "America's toughest sheriff," called for the U.S. Congress to investigate his findings, which concluded that forgers committed two crimes, first in creating a fraudulent document and then in fraudulently presenting it to the public.

"I want to make this perfectly clear. I am not accusing the sitting president of the United States of committing a crime. But there remain a lot of questions which beg for answers and we intend to move forward with this investigation in pursuit of those answers," Arpaio said.

Arpaio's accusations come as he undergoes investigation by the U.S. Justice Department over what it says is his widespread discrimination against Latinos.

In December, the Justice Department said Arpaio and his deputies violated U.S. civil rights laws by engaging in racial profiling of Latinos and making unlawful arrests in their bid to crack down on illegal immigrants.

Arpaio told reporters on Thursday his review of Obama's birth certificate began in August, months before the Justice Department investigation findings in December, and denied that it was politically motivated.

I remember watching a few minutes of the presser when this "breathtaking new development" first happened last month - their IT "expert" got up & did a 30 minute PowerPoint dog & pony about how the PDF file provided by the administration was "layered" - i.e., it had seperate elements - it was possible to "grab" the seal, for instance, and move it around, reletive to the other text "layers"..

He then leaps to the completely illogical conclusion that the document must have been assembled in the first place -

Sad, really, that someone calling himself an IT "expert" doesn't know that most scanning software automatically creates layers in the resulting edoc - which says nothing whatsoever about the original.

I could take that guy's driver's licence, for instance, scan it, and the resulting scanned document would be "layered" - the photo would be a seperate object from the text of his name, etc.

So that would mean, by his own logic, his original driver's license never existed. It must have been created in layers. It's a forgery!

I don't know about the birth certificate, but no question Obama's Selective Service Card is a fake since it has a fake date on it and a poor one at that. But most of the media is in the tank for Obama, so they don't bother investigating it. Who did it and why, who knows? Apparently Arpaio has this as evidence. Also as part of evidence, a mailman who delivered mail to the Ayers for years swears they told him they were helping(by paying his education) a foreign student get through college and he met the guy and says it was Obama who told him he'd be president one day.

It's really pitiable, and like I said before: If I were in this guy's county I'd be calling for his resignation as this whole episode demonstrates his complete inability to competently do the job he was elected to do.

Amazing how clean Obama is, much to the distaste of the desperate right.


Solyndra turned out to be, if not a complete nothingburger, not nearly as much of a big deal as Republicans so fervently hoped. Yeah, a bunch of money went down the toilet, and people in the administration really wanted the company to succeed, despite its weaknesses, and that eagerness caused some of them to write some sketchy emails. But that's really it. And Solyndra is, by far, the closest thing to a major scandal the Obama administration has suffered.

A close second is the "Fast and Furious" operation at the ATF, which was an obvious screw-up but without anything that even resembled corruption. Which, when you think back on every administration that preceded it, both Republican and Democratic, is pretty remarkable. It's entirely possible that Obama could finish out his first term without a single significant scandal. No shtupping interns, no trading arms for hostages, no secret break-ins, nothing.
