Default Peyton Manning single-handedly lifts the Broncos into preseason Super Bowl contenders.

Peyton Manning single-handedly lifts the Broncos into preseason Super Bowl contenders.

Merely by closing the deal with Peyton Manning, Broncos front-office boss John Elway has become a leading candidate for NFL executive of the year.

Elway is not a cinch, though. One, don't dismiss the possibility of a Tebowmaniac infiltrating the voting process. Pat Robertson has had a strong following over the years, and he's plenty mad.

Two, Elway still has to do something about the two doughnuts at the front of the middle of the other side of the ball.

This has to be the year when the Broncos view defensive tackle as a slightly more significant position than long snapper (no offense, Lonie Paxton).

The Broncos' 2012 starting lineup is pretty much set after Elway, general manager Brian Xanders and head coach John Fox brought in what appears to be the greatest free-agent class in team history.

On paper, of course.

"I've had several phone calls: 'You're going to the Super Bowl,' " Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said. "Text messages: 'You're going to the Super Bowl.' Even in my house, same thing. One thing I do know, I've been in a similar position like this (with the Washington Redskins in 2001) when everybody expected us to go to the Super Bowl. But we didn't put the time in. You don't win the Super Bowl in March. You win it throughout the season, working in the offseason, so we can't get caught up in it. We've got to hunker down and go to work just like everybody else."

I hope that depth chart is speculation by the Post instead of from a team source, because there's some changes I'd like to see the team make.

1) Dreessen is a long snapper, so I'd prefer to cut Lonie Paxton in favor of activating another ST warm and body on Sundays.

2) I like the look of a Clady-Franklin-Walton-Kuper-Harris OLine much better than last year's model. I hope that they go into camp with that look as an option, and switch back to last year's line once Harris inevitably goes on IR.

3) Not that it makes our DT situation any less desperate, but I'm surprised that Vickerson and Warren aren't listed at the position, given that they were last year's projected starters.

4) It's been said a million times here, but I really hope Nasty Nate can beat out the Idiot Cannonball for the MLB job.

5) Trading for Stewart makes this offense suddenly look surprisingly potent, and I think we need to make it happen.

Love the offseason, hope springs eternal. Ain't no single-handed involved in a superbowl run.

In his career, quarterback Peyton Manning has averaged 26 points a game. During his ten-year head coaching career, John Fox is 39-3 when his team has scored 26 or more points a game.

I disagree on long snapper unless Dressen matches Paxton's metric in how fast and accuarate his snaps are. The team keeps metrics on these things and I bet Paxton is far better at it than Dressen. Prater is a lethal weapon and I'd prefer to keep that in tact in favor of another warm body

Well as soon as the team is getting beat, all we will hear is it's the defenses fault, and Manning needs help at WR, Oline, and a defense that gives up less than 20 a game.

These excuses get re-hashed every single year.

Lots of possibilities on defense as well. Nobody at DT opens up two more spots at linebacker or in the secondary for Fox and Del Rio to get creative with.

Yes I'm bitter about Tebow. But it was my view that this team was terrible with Tebow, as well. This team is still terrible.

you're entitled to your opinion but you're wrong

I wouldn't say they are at 8-1 odds but they are definitely not terrible
