Default How do we compare to the 2007 Colts?

Colts in blue, Broncos in orange. I think it's a fair comparison to make because you're assuming you need to be comparable to this team in order to overcome a potential SB opponent.

Quarterbacks

18 Peyton Manning
12 Jim Sorgi

18 Peyton Manning
2 Adam Weber
- unknown

I'm going to assume we'll get Peyton a competent backup and he plays at a similar level.

QBs - Toss Up

Running Backs
29 Joseph Addai
30 Clifton Dawson
36 Kenton Keith
45 Luke Lawton

Running Backs
35 Lance Ball
27 Knowshon Moreno
37 Jeremiah Johnson
23 Willis McGahee

RBs - Denver +1

Wide Receivers
80 Devin Aromashodu
11 Anthony Gonzalez
88 Marvin Harrison
15 Craphonso Thorpe KR/PR
87 Reggie Wayne

Wide Receivers
87 Eric Decker PR
16 D'Andre Goodwin
88 Demaryius Thomas
12 Matthew Willis
-- Jason Hill
-- Andre Caldwell (was 87 on Bengals)

WRs - Indianapolis +2

Tight Ends
44 Dallas Clark
81 Bryan Fletcher
86 Ben Utecht

Tight Ends
85 Virgil Green (likely suspended 6 games)
80 Julius Thomas

TEs - Indianapolis +2

Offensive Linemen
71 Ryan Diem T
57 Dylan Gandy C/G
72 Corey Hilliard T
74 Charlie Johnson T
65 Ryan Lilja G
63 Jeff Saturday C
73 Jake Scott G
75 Michael Toudouze T
67 Tony Ugoh T

Offensive Linemen
68 Zane Beadles G/T
78 Ryan Clady T
75 Chris Clark T
74 Orlando Franklin T
72 Ryan Harris T
76 Tony Hills T
73 Chris Kuper G
71 Russ Hochstein C/G
65 Manny Ramirez G
50 J. D. Walton C

OL Indianapolis +2

Defensive Linemen
79 Raheem Brock DT
60 Jeff Charleston DE
96 Keyunta Dawson DE
99 Ed Johnson DT
90 Dan Klecko DT
98 Robert Mathis DE
97 Quinn Pitcock DT
95 Darrell Reid DT/DE
91 Josh Thomas DE
93 Dwight Freeney DE

Defensive Linemen
91 Robert Ayers DE
92 Elvis Dumervil DE
95 Derrick Harvey DE
90 Jason Hunter DE
98 Ryan McBean DT (likely suspended 6 games)
79 Marcus Thomas DT
96 Mitch Unrein DT

DL - This tricky because our SOLB forms so much of our pass rush. I don't really remember how stout these Colts were against the run. Still, Indianapolis + 1

Linebackers
53 Brandon Archer ILB
50 Rocky Boiman OLB
58 Gary Brackett ILB
52 Ramón Guzman OLB
56 Tyjuan Hagler OLB
54 Freddie Keiaho OLB
55 Clint Session OLB

Linebackers
57 Mario Haggan MLB
56 Nate Irving MLB
59 Brian Iwuh OLB
51 Joe Mays MLB
58 Von Miller OLB
53 Mike Mohamed MLB
55 D. J. Williams OLB (likely suspended 6 games for being a dumbass)
52 Wesley Woodyard OLB

LB - Toss Up (Von Miller alone vs Brackett and Session)

Defensive Backs
41 Antoine Bethea FS
33 Melvin Bullitt FS
25 Michael Coe CB
42 Brannon Condren FS
43 Matt Giordano S
26 Kelvin Hayden CB
28 Marlin Jackson CB
23 Tim Jennings CB
35 Keiwan Ratliff CB
34 T. J. Rushing CB/KR/PR
21 Bob Sanders SS

Defensive Backs
24 Champ Bailey CB
30 David Bruton FS
36 Rafael Bush SS
28 Quinton Carter SS
32 Tony Carter CB
20 Brian Dawkins SS (possible retirement)
21 André Goodman CB
25 Chris Harris CB
26 Rahim Moore FS
29 Jonathan Wilhite CB

Indianapolis +1 (only because of a healthy Sanders and Bethea versus the weakness of Goodman)

Special Teams
17 Hunter Smith P
48 Justin Snow LS/TE
4 Adam Vinatieri K

Special Teams
54 David Binn LS
4 Britton Colquitt P
66 Lonie Paxton LS
5 Matt Prater K

Special teams - Toss Up

QBs - Toss Up
RBs - Denver +1
WRs - Indianapolis +2
TEs - Indianapolis +2
OL - Indianapolis +2
DL - Indianapolis +1
LBs - Toss Up
DBs - Indianapolis +1
STs - Toss Up

Total - Indianapolis + 7

Honestly writing that felt like a vintage 03-04 colt beatdown. So basically they were a lot better than we are.

You're missing some people, where's Kuper? Also, the Broncos roster is not set so you aren't really making a fair comparison.

your missing WR Jason Hill. He started for the Jags for a while.

Prater is good, but Vinatieri is at least the best kicker of this generation, and might be of all time.

This is easy, the 2007 colts had an amazing 32yr old QB with a healthy neck. the 2012 Broncos have a 36 yr old sure fire HOF QB coming off a year off, and 3,4,5 neck surgeries. He could be pretty good, or could be average.

I like the analysis and don't disagree with much at all

You have TE at Indy +2. I think this will be addressed. So +2--> +1
You have OL at Indy +2. Eh. Colts made some changes that year. Bumped Ugoh for Johnson. Moved some people around. All in all, they weren't that good but played good in the playoffs. Denver will make some upgrades by the opener. So +2--> 0
DL - Bad against run but good against pass. But Indy +1 is fair
LB - You have toss up. Session was a rookie. Bracket was in 1st year as a starter. Luck held these guys together. Even if Denver is only fair...still easy Denver goes to +1
ST - Agree with others. Indy +1, maybe even +2. Vinatieri is awesome. Hunter Smith was also a great punter. And the little known Justin Snow was a flawless holder and long snapper (Peyton never holds kicks)

So I have Indy +4 after a few adjustments.
A few more sneaky FA pick ups, a few key draft picks that don't fall flat....let's get that up to +0!

Fair points. Your memory of these guys is clearly better than mine. I hope to revisit when we have a final 53. I'll add Kuper et al when I get a chance (I blame wiki... Freeney wasn't even on there ffs).

On the Pats... was he the same guy on the Colts in 07? Hit me in the head if he had some game winning kick in the playoffs but I'm drawing a blank.

Your overrating the Colts OL and also the Colts DL outside of Freeney and Mathis was awful.

Never realized that his two main targets in Indy were 88 and 87. Same as it's going to be here. Kind of funny really!

You still think Denver with Miller, Mays and Woodyard starting (DJ suspended) is better than their LBs?

I don't know. Maybe.
Just that Session was a rookie and Brackett was meh. Neither was anything much in their career. All the rest of the LB's were nobodys
