Default Cowboys and Redskins hit with cap violations in uncapped year

Schefter reports (on his FB page, from his tweets):

Quote:
NFL is taking away millions of dolllar of salary-cap space from Cowboys and Redskins for how they front-loaded deals during uncapped year.
Quote:
Cowboys lose $10 million in cap space, Redskins lose $36 million in space. Can split it over 2012 and 2013 any way they want.
Wow, that Redskins cap hit is hard! I was wondering why other teams weren't front loading contracts like mad during the uncapped year, seemed like a thing to do, and not against the rules (no cap means no cap violations). I guess the league is whatever King Roger I decrees.

Free cap space for us though...

Quote:
All that money goes to 28 other teams -- $1.6 million each -- except for Saints and Raiders, who don't get any but don't lose any.

Wow, so much for the FA spending spree the Skins were going to go on. Now no draft picks or FA's to build with!

It'll be split over 2012 and 2013 so the Skins will lose $18m this year.

They can do $1 this year and $35 next year or vice versa, or any combination they want to. But the Redskins have to clear $36 million is a lot to a team that has no picks and relies on signing free agents to give them talent.

They were $31MM under the cap before this - so they can still make a big splash with at least one big name.

Too bad they have more needs than one player will solve...

Redskins are a joke, they'll have RG3 but no first rounder for 3 years and no playmakers and now no capspace.

The supply of FA this year far outweigh the demand. Redskins will be fine signing enough FAs . Colts just release 5 for example. It will be a buyers market this year

Funny thing is that the NFL HQ stated that there was no volitional of the rules, just that other owners complained that Redskins and Cowboys didn't follow the unwritten policy that league put in place during the uncapped year.

Maroney reminds me alot of Tebow, both are poor running backs neither of which can throw the football.

36 million? man i'd have every lawyer on the payroll cooking up some kind of appeal.
no firsts for 3 years, a loss of big time cap space and you still lack a big time play maker at WR? someone from the NFL would have to put me in a grave and cement over it for me not to fight that.

I was wondering if there was anything in writing preventing them from using the uncapped year to frontload. Found this tweet:

Quote:

Again, no written warnings about loading uncapped year, but verbal warnings on "abusing uncapped year." Owners pushed for punishment.

Nothing in writing, just a vague warning, so I guess they might have a case if they want to fight it.

Sounds like the other owners pushed for it too. I guess they all hate Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder as much as NFL fans do.

This is BS and Goodell knows it. If they can appeal like the players do with their suspensions, I'll expect these fines to get knocked down to like $2 mil and $5 mil when all is said and done.

That is some bull****. Penalize the teams trying to win and actually spend money.

Good luck to Shanahan. Year 3 with a rookie QB and will have to be really creative to say the least to add weapons for their QB since their offense was not just missing a QB.
