Default Students Disciplined For Racist “USA USA USA” Chant

High School Basketball Fans Disciplined For Racist “USA USA USA” Victory Chant

(CBS) - A high school basketball celebration turned ugly in San Antonia after fans at the game reportedly began a racially charged chant. Against a team made up predominantly of Hispanic players, fans of Alamo Heights (Texas) High School started a chant that the opposing team found offensive. The chant was, "USA, USA, USA!"

Alamo Heights' celebration went sour a few minutes after the final whistle when certain members of the school's fan section began the "USA" chant. Alamo Heights boys basketball coach Andrew Brewer moved quickly to end the chanting, but the damage was already done. San Antonio (Texas) Edison High School - whose student body is 96 percent Hispanic - filed a complaint about the incident with the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of Texas public high school extracurricular activities.

Brown adds that there will be "consequences" for students identified as participating in the chant. KENS reports that students tied to the chanting have already been banned from attending the team's state semifinal against Dallas (Texas) Kimball High on Thursday.

"We have tried to use this as a teachable moment for them," Brown said. "We have talked to our students. We've taken responsibility for it, although what happened is not representative of everybody who was there

I love my country and there is a time and place to chant this, but not here. I grew up on the border and this is a taunt. I was watching the news where they were arguing that this was clearly a hit against the country. Give me a break.

This is the best part:

"There will be "consequences" for students identified as participating in the chant. and that the students tied to the chanting have already been banned from attending the team's state semifinal against Dallas (Texas) Kimball High on Thursday.

"We have tried to use this as a teachable moment for them," Brown said".

That should teach those little bastards not to chant USA, USA, USA what to hell where they thinking? ....

I agree probably not the time or place but to single these kids out as racists might be a little too much, they are high school kids having fun no harm no foul.

Its not racism its nationalism. Geeze reporting stinks now days. What we are saying is that it is no longer cool to say I am an American and proud of it, especially if you are near the border? **** that. Freedom of speech, get a lawyer and sue. No way any jury would ever rule chanting USA is hate speech.

The real teachable moment here is for Superintendent Brown to learn about the US Constitution and specifically the part about freedom of speech. Why are so many education administrators the functional equivalent of Nazis?

Lawyers get rich just off the fact so many that run local politics, public schools etc don't understand a persons rights under the constitution.

Look at our police. They just got told tracking people with a GPS needs a warrant. h ya think? They knew all along it did they just don't care. Now they have 3500 devices they had to turn off. 3500 Americans having their rights trounced because police are lazy and dont care. Schools are the same way.

We would be better off with all private schools and no unions.

I heard on the news that the students from Edison High School that were also chanting "Alamo Whites" at the Alamo Heights Students will not be reprimanded.

Context is a good thing. This clearly wasn't a nationalism thing. I wouldn't necessarily call it racist but it sounds like the ultimate message was to imply the Hispanics weren't Americans.

I don't think being a jerk should be punishable either, though. If they make fun of a fat kid,it's just being mean. If they imply a racial angle, people piss themselves in fear and overreact.

Here's the link

George Rodriguez, a columnist for the paper, criticized the complaint as a politically correct overreaction. There's more to the story that's been reported by national media, according to Rodriguez. Some Edison students may have been chanting "Alamo Whites" during the game, he wrote.

If their intent was to imply the opponents were not Americans then it is. Why else does one chant USA when watching two American teams play?

So lets say the Beaumont Texas team was all black players would it be ok to chant "Beaumont Blacks"?

The race discussion doesn't get less ridiculous if everyone jumps in. It just gets more absurd. Someone insulting me by calling me white would be much better served to rely on an outdated "yo mama" joke. It just doesn't get to me. To each their own, I guess.

See that's the point. the whole situation is absurd and wrong on both sides but not a racist action or a teachable moment, it's high school kids having fun no harm no foul.

Agreed. The kids were being jerks in what they were implying (assuming it wasn't understood to be in jest) but I do believe the school overreacted. I just don't think it makes it better for everyone to pull the race card just because one idiot does.
