Reports Say 3-$90 Million Deals in Works for Manning

McLean, VA (USA Today/CBS) --

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m. ET: The Broncos, Titans and 49ers are now all working on contracts for Manning with a rough framework of five years and $90 million, which would be equivalent to the deal he signed with the Colts last summer, per Mike Klis of The Denver Post; he previously reported the Broncos had started with a five-year, $60 million package.

Manning and Patriots QB Tom Brady both had deals last season that averaged $18 million annually, tops in NFL history. It appears Manning could remain in the same fiscal stratosphere going forward.

Anyone think that maybe he failed the physical and the Broncos are keeping a lid on it for his sake?

Ever think he didn't NEED to throw any passes?

The team just wanted to see how well he'll fit in our Read-Option offense.

They were sitting out in the parking lot, saw Cutcliffe, and 3 WR show up in a white van followed by Manning. They were in workout clothes, went inside facility. Then left a while later. How do they figure he didn't throw a pass? They were sitting in the parking lot while everyone else was inside the indoor field?

But for that theory it'd have to be true that he was lying all along about wanting to make an early decision at the front end of free agency. I don't think he was that machievellian. I agree with your thinking as how the various offers came about, and how the price kept going up.

If those figures are true, we started off by lowballing PM and prolonged the process ourselves. Effing stupid FO. No way was he signing for 5/60 mil without kicking the tires at a few other places.

I would die laughing if someone posted a video of the workout and they had Manning running the option.

we didn't start at 5/60, Klis just ****ed up the original report by saying the framework was 5/60 when he meant 90. that's what the story is saying.

I am telling you he is just being a class act and going to give TN the look he promised them. Broncos have the most cap room to sign him and I think they will. 9'ers would be a better team but dont think they are going to be able to afford the large contract on their cap. I think its the Broncos all the way and as Elway said its just all a part of the process.

They got about 15-18 mil in cap space. 90 mil doesn't seem to scare them

http://www.ninersnation.com/2012/3/1...wallace-happen

Niner Cap Hell has the 49ers with around $18M in cap space, while Matt Maiocco is estimating the 49ers are in the $15 million range. The difference in these two would be Maiocco estimating around a $3M cap hit for Rogers, while NCH lists Rogers with a cap figure of $5,580 (for some "other" category).
The 49ers can potentially save up to $3M if they unload Shawntae Spencer, but we don't really know what their plans are with regards to Spencer. And of course, Alex Smith still doesn't have a contract in place. The 49ers conceivably could have somewhere in the range of $15 million and $18 million. They need to re-sign Alex Smith (one would assume) and probably add a veteran guard.
We don't really know if the 49ers or anybody else are making a run at Wallace with an offer sheet. If the 49ers are looking to add him, the first year of the contract would likely need a cap hit in the $11M to $12M range. It is necessary because the idea is to push it too high for the Steelers to match. That means a high base salary in year one, as opposed to a huge signing bonus that gets prorated.
I believe the 49ers will need somewhere in the $4M to $5M range to sign their draft picks. If that's the case, even if the 49ers release Shawntae Spencer, it still might be a little too close for the 49ers to pull the trigger

Whats funny is that, while they were supposedly working him out, NFL net was showing the "10 worst FA pickups of all time".

I'm not worried about SF. They don't have the cap space to get this done.

I dont think he was lying, I think he expected either SF or Houston to make an early bid, neither of which happened. I think he would have signed right away if Houston had brought him in.

Keep in mind, he and his agent probably had gone over all those scenarios in advance and needed another plan if it didn't work out with one of those teams. He really didnt have much to choose from until the Titans mucked up the works, but now that one of his preferred destinations is in the hunt, I don't see anyway he doesn't go there.

Doesn't seem like it. It would stand to reason that SF is using Manning against Alex Smith, and Condon is using SF against Den and Ten. Where this theory is weak is that Condon apparently reps both Manning and Smith...
