Peyton: Okay, Tom. I want to keep this serious.

Condon: I had you going there for a minute.

Peyton: Yeah. That was a good one.

Am I to deduce that our collection of stooges have left NC with neither Peyton nor a contract? Fantastic work gents. Good thing we brought pizza boy along. Slap*****. Coffee is for closers.

With Manning we would be.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure out FO is too stupid to let him have the control he wants.

If this is truly about money SF isn't a real candidate. But if there's even the slightest bit of interest on Manning's part of winning another SB, he's headed to SF.

Or he could play in Denver and risk his neck behind that terrible OL, throwing to no names. Tough decision.
First off, the niners line is just as bad, although they have some young guys who will improve this offseason. Two, the niners don't want this deal. They are just messing with Alex. If you look at where the niners are talent wise and cap wise, there is no way they will risk salary cap hell (which made them a doormat for 10 years last time) for one shot when they have a team that could contend for years to come.

Every team is contenders with Manning. The Colts just proved that.

But if Manning comes to Denver, he gets to play in the AFC West against teams like KC, San Diego, and Oakland. Easy path to the playoffs.

If SF ends up landing this thing, they will have put on a Front Office clinic.

Not even a peep of controversy around them being in the sweepstakes while the other players in the race run around beclowning themselves.

If anything, it already proves that you didn't need to create an EFX style 3-ring circus to have a chance at Manning.

But HOW do they sign him? Where is the money they need? I mean, they can't even offer him a lowball contract.

I really don't see how the FO has created a "3 ring circus" at all. They contacted Manning's agent and brought him in for a visit last week, which from all accounts was fairly low-key. They then allowed him to go visit other teams and began outlining the structure of a contract with his agent. Beyond that, we've barely heard a peep from them until today, when they organized a workout with Manning that, by Elway's account, was productive.

I'm not denying that the whole Manning thing HAS been a circus, but I fail to see how EFX are to blame for it. They were the first ones to bring him in, started talking contract, and met with him to watch him throw. It's not like they pulled a Bud Adams and got the governor to call him or starting offering him front office positions.

I guess maybe I'm missing something in why $18 in cap space makes it impossible. I'm still not totally clear on what it is Manning's being offered up front.

This makes it sound fairly straightforward for the 9ers

The Denver Post reported some numbers that the teams are working off -- and it's confirmed -- that the conversation is starting at five years, $90 million with $30 million guaranteed.

With $18 million in cap space, that is not an issue for the 49ers. The issue is whether the 49ers really want to make a huge commitment to Manning, and whether Manning is sold on the idea of playing for the 49ers.

According to one source, Manning does not necessarily want to re-create what he had in Indianapolis. He has asked questions about how things might be different with his new team. That includes the offense, the personnel and how practices are structured.

So, conceivably, Harbaugh could be persuasive in showing Manning how he would fit perfectly into the same kind of scheme the 49ers designed for Alex Smith a year ago.

There's been an offer on the table to Smith for some time. It's a deal, sources have said, that leaves the door open for Colin Kaepernick to take over as the starter in the future. CEO Jed York said Monday that the ball was in Smith's court.

Now, with Harbaugh, Smith's biggest supporter, taking a cross-country flight to talk to Manning, it seems as if Smith has very little control of the matter.

You and me both, but all indications are that he is set to make 68 of that 90 in the first to years which makes it kind of hard. I'm asking a legit question here. i really don't get the whole thing.

They were 10-6 and made it to the playoffs. They lost Manning and went 2-4. There's no reason to believe Peyton Manning couldn't make any given 8-8 team an immediate contender.

Hey, he might even make it so that a leadership hampered 7-9 team doesn't finish last in a bad division.
