Woody Paige: Elway and Tebow star in a dickens of an Xmas Eve tale

The Christmas Bronco, by Charles Dickens:

On Christmas Eve morning 2011, Buffalo was bleak, biting, bitter as usual. And the weather was worse.

Elway sat, warm and toasty, in his hotel suite listening to the people outside wheezing up and down the street.

"Bah!" said Elway. "Humbug."

Elway remembered a similar cold January day in 1992 in Buffalo when he and the Broncos played the Bills for the AFC Championship. The Broncos' kicker missed three field goals; Elway was forced out with a thigh injury; and the Bills prevailed 10-7, preventing the Broncos from advancing to their fourth Super Bowl in six seasons.

Then, Elway thought about young Timmy and what to do about him. Elway was inconclusive. Elway said to himself: "Self, is he the future of our franchise or just a passing I mean, running fancy?"

Suddenly, an apparition appeared. Elway's famous smile disappeared.

"Duke of Denver, we must talk."

"Who are you?"

"I am your old coach Dan Reeves, the Bronco of Christmas Past, and I've come to take you back to December 24, 1983."

Before Elway could respond, they were in the Kingdome in Seattle. The Broncos and the Seahawks struggled in the first half of a playoff game in Elway's first year, and the rookie quarterback was watching from the sideline.

"I didn't start you this game, and you were so upset with me. I said publicly 'Steve DeBerg gives us the best chance to win.' I should have.

I like Woody ( usually) but I didn't like this. Let's leave the Dickens references out of Broncos football, please.

While Woody is a good sportswriter he is not all that creative. I'd rather he just mention that the Broncos need to not Scrooge our Xmas, and Win this game upcoming.

You think Dickens wants a byline for this hack piece?
