Default Champ Bailey best defensive player in Broncos history

Kiszla: Champ Bailey best defensive player in Broncos history

To tell the truth, cornerback Champ Bailey didn't expect to be here. He didn't expect to be in first place. Heck, he didn't expect to be in Denver. He was as good as gone from the Broncos a year ago.

"A year ago, I didn't know if the Broncos even wanted me," Bailey said Wednesday. "I didn't know if I would be back. The signs were it wasn't going to happen."

The improbable tale of how Denver became the NFL's best comeback story of 2011 could not have been written without Bailey coming back to town, when he could have found fortune elsewhere. So maybe it's time we recognize this 10-time Pro Bowler for all he's worth: Bailey is the best defensive player in franchise history.

"Thanks," Bailey told me, accepting the praise with humility.

At age 33, he is too busy running down dreams to dwell on his legacy.

But make no mistake. "One of my goals is to be in the Hall of Fame and be mentioned among the greatest," Bailey said.

Declaring Bailey the No. 1 defender ever to wear a Broncos jersey is saying a mouthful, certain to ignite debate. Denver is a franchise with a hard-earned defensive reputation. There are bruises caused from tackles by Rich "Tombstone" Jackson in the 1960s that are yet to heal.

And the hits have kept on coming for decades. Here is one man's opinion of the best five Broncos to draw a line in the dirt and make a defensive stand:

1) Bailey: Thrives despite league rules rigged against him.

2) Steve Atwater: Real MVP of the first Super Bowl victory.

3) Randy Gradishar: Put the pop in the Orange Crush.

4) Karl Mecklenburg: The thinking man's wrecking ball.

5) Louis Wright: Among most underrated corners of all time.

Second half is in the link.

Meh, he's missing Dennis Smith who many feel was better than Atwater. Also, Paul Smith should be on that list as well. How about Rubin Carter or Tom Jackson........

And Gradishar should be #1 on the list. No doubt.

champ and Louis Wright would love to see the 2 play with the same rules .... . but in the end Champ very well could be ....No diss to Gradishar , DS 49 , Atwater , Ruben Carter , and the 2 most over looked players in this topic , Rulon Jones and Karl Mecklinburg

Rich Jackson. But it's a kizla article and therefore not worthy of comment. The fact he doesn't even know who Rich Jackson is defines Kizla. What my dog shat on my front lawn had more substance that kizla's writing.

Gradishar is the greatest defensive player that ever suited up for the Broncos. I still can't believe he isn't in the HOF, he should have been the first one inducted. Champ is a great player the best DB we've had but what Gradishar contributed overall make's him the best ever. Kiszla is the biggest slime at the Denver Post, the guy has rarley been right about anything when it comes to the Broncos.

For ****'s sake is right. TD had 165 yards and three TDs and his decoy goalline play was instrumental in a 4th... he absolutely deserved that award.

I have to agree. I love me some Atwater, but TD rushed for over 150 yards and 3 scores, while missing a significant chunk of the game because of the migraine. He had to be the MVP.

Oh I agree and not trying to minimize that. But TD was everywhere too... Including the opposing endzone several times.

Atwater played an excellent game. Just awesome. Perfect if not for the dropped int......still, TD's game was off the charts and he deserved the MVP.

Same thing w/Darrien Gordon in SB XXIII. GREAT game, but you're not taking it from #7.

This probably has to be the second best trade the Broncos have made since the Elway trade.

I know people like to go old school with Gradishar and Atwater and Jackson, etc.
But Champ is the best defensive player in Broncos history. He was voted #2 in Defensive Player of the Year honors twice, and had a very good case both times. 2005 should've been his most definitely and 2006 he just went against an amazing year from Jason Taylor.
Most Pro Bowls in NFL history for a CB.
This year virtually every game he has shut down the opponent receivers.
A complete corner who can tackle.
Made an amazing play in our lone playoff victory the last decade.

Had Atwater held onto that easy INT, he would have been MVP, but TD deserved it. I mean, coming back from a migraine, 3 TDs, all the yards.

I dont mind the top 5 list but I cant put DBs and front 7 in the same catagory normally. Wright was one of the best we had during his start in the 70s. Infact, that whole 1977 team had some serious studs that should last the history of this franchise. Gradishar had 200 tackles in a 14 game league! He was everywhere. He needs to be in the HOF. My list of DBs are as follows (and in no particular order)

1) Bailey
2) Wright
3) Dennis Smith
4) Atwater

list for LBs (no order):
1) Fletcher (my adoptee)
2) Gradishar
3) Mecklenberg
4) Tom Jackson

DL:
1) Paul Smith
2) Tombstone Jackson

What guys like Alpha, Broncbow and Mac would say best two players:
1) Tebow
2 Von Miller

NO other player has had teams completely shut off the option of going that direction. There is no stat for number of times teams went away from a player. The other thing that makes Champ great is that unlike other CBs Champ brings the wood
