This Is What We Should Be Looking For in Our Elected Officials
...people who take the will of the people and the health of the republic seriously.
"WASHINGTON - Hardly anyone noticed in March when U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, a three-term Democrat from Minnesota, reintroduced a long-dormant bill to combat insider trading in Congress.
On Tuesday, the former Mankato social studies teacher was the star witnesses in a packed hearing on his own bill, dubbed the STOCK Act (Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge). For the past three weeks, Walz's colleagues have been rushing to sign on. He is now up to 170 co-sponsors. House GOP leaders have introduced their own version of the bill, and several versions have been hatched recently in the Senate, including one by Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.
"I'm glad to hear my colleagues now have all these wonderful ideas," Walz said in a hallway between meetings. "We couldn't get an idea out of anybody before.""
This bill gained public steam because a Sarah Palin aide Peter Schweizer wrote a book called "Throw Them All Out" exposing congressional insider trading rules and it was so shocking that even left-wing outlets like 60 minutes , Washington Post, and NY Times couldn't help but investigate...even questioning formerly sacred cow Nancy Pelosi in a now-notorious press conference.
Here is an issue we can all agree on.
There are many more of them including campaign finance reform, term limits in the house and senate, a balanced budget amendment, etc., that we should all be able to band together and get put through our government.
Don't let them swipe these proverbial political footballs from our onrushing field goal attempt.
