Tebow Overshadows More Vocal NFL Christians

Interesting that Dawk is named as more outspoken than Tim and he's on our team too.

Tim Tebow has become the poster boy for religious devotion in the National Football League, but other stars have largely flown under the religion radar.

The managing editor at Patheos, a website devoted to religious issues, told USA Today that Tebow may not even be the most vocal Christian on the Broncos. "It is odd that there are more outspoken Christians on the Denver Broncos like Brian Dawkins. It is odd that Tebow has become this figure," Patton Dodd told the national newspaper.

Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu is most often mentioned by fellow players for his spiritual devotion, according to Dodd, who authored The Tebow Mystique. Polamalu, famous for his long hair and huge hits, actually prays during the action.

Yeah I pointed this out to some of the more ardent critics like Tailgate Nut, how we have had, and currently have more vocal Christians than Tebow on the team and found the anger toward those players was borderline non-existent. Curious.

Tebow just under the microscope. How often do the other teams get asked is this QB going to be on your team next yr as the starter? Hardly any outside of Jets, Broncos etc etc. It's a total joke. Ask Tebow football questions and he won't say praise the lord. Ask where he gets his motivation, how he works so hard, how he stays positive and what do you think he is going to say? The whole situation shows how crappy journalism has sunk in the sports world. Bunch of absolute hacks!

There have always been vocal Christians in sports, but few have had the high profile Tebow has, which is why he engenders the anger he does from a lot of people who like to pretend it's his on-field play they're criticizing, but the radical passion they exhibt towards the guy says otherwise. I think it's just making him a better prepared QB in terms of handling that kind of spot light and public scrutiny at this young an age.

Some of those who are religious also characterize the issues with Tebow as being ALL due to religion, which is not true. In America, which is something like 80% Christian, for some reason a section of very vocal Christian zealots have convinced themselves, and tried to convince the world, that they are an oppressed minority in America. They believe that somebody (the Left, the government, et al) is out to get them. That minority's paranoia has driven a lot of this bull****.

A lot of people had issues with Tebow being drafted that high, coming from the Urban Meyer system, and doubted that he would transition to the NFL. Those two things got mixed up.

Incidentally, Philip Rivers is a very outspoken Christian as well. Probably less so than Tebow, Polamalu, or Dawkins, but he's all over Catholic media. In fact he made Bleacher Report's 25 most religous athletes list.

Yep. While it's true that the media has been hyper-critical of Tebow, there is little evidence that this is religiously motivated. I mean, seriously....what is the religious affiliation of Merril Hodge, or Trent Dilfer? Are we supposed to believe all the critics are liberal atheists? Given the religious makeup of the country (around 80% Christian, as you pointed out), it stands to reason that many of those skeptics or "haters" are fellow Christians. There is something more complex at work in the Tebow phenomenon that goes beyond religion.
