Default John Elway meant no disrespect to Broncos' Tim Tebow

Posted: 11/28/2011 12:20:01 PM MST
Updated: 11/28/2011 01:43:20 PM MST By Lindsay H. Jones

This time, John Elway evaded all controversy.

On his weekly radio show this morning, the Broncos' boss avoided saying anything that might be construed as negative about quarterback Tim Tebow.

Instead, Elway praised the Broncos' overall effort in Sunday's 16-13 overtime victory against the Chargers, including the Tebow-led fourth-quarter comeback. Tebow completed 9-of-18 passes (his highest completion percentage of the season), threw one touchdown and did not commit a turnover.

"It's mistake-free football, it's playing great defense and running the ball on the offensive side and really making the plays when they need to be made. I think that's what's happening," Elway said on the show on 102.3 FM. "We're not beating ourselves on the offensive side. We're playing with passion, good hard-nosed football, and tackling, catching and running, and that's kind of what it's all about it."

A week ago, Elway set off an internet firestorm after he said that he didn't know if the team's quarterback of the future is on the roster. Tebow fans flooded Elway's Twitter account with negative messages.

"I was surprised that people took it to be a negative answer. That's why I was taken aback because it wasn't meant to be a strike at Timmy at all. It was just a reality check of where we were at the time. It wasn't a negative. I tried to follow it up with all the positives and point out things that we need to get better at," Elway said. "I was disappointed. Obviously I need to do a better job of communicating that message, because the way it was taken, it was taken more negatively than I meant it to be. It's something I'll learn from.

I guess Elway is reading the Public Relations 101 Tips thread after all!

"We're really making the plays when they need to be made...We're playing good hard-nosed football."

See how easy it is to get interviewed for 10 minutes and say absolutely nuttin?

Congrats, Elway! You've shown real improvement from last week as our GM! Woo hoo!

Rep to Elway for owning up to foot-in-mouth syndrome and using the Bull Durham mentality

I don't have a problem with what he said last week, but as the top executive, John has to remember that he has to account for that plenty of crazy people will take his words to mean the most extreme things you could possibly interpret them to mean. As the top exec, rather than assume you're talking to the rational, grounded people in the fanbase, John has to speak to the crazy at all times, or get burnt.

Don't worry, John. Tim isn't a p***Y like the fans who were offended by that simple, rational comment. I'm sure he agreed with you, and the players are the ones to worry about.

This is all I need to hear. Elway's heart is in the right place. He may not decide that Tebow is the future, but I think he's genuinely not trying to put a negative message out or be a distraction. And that kind of quote shows his Elways ego is not all mixed up in this. Elway knows he's still the Hall of Famer, and doesn't have to be small-minded about admitting mistakes or anything like that.

Here's a better suggestion: speak like people are going to hear your words.

Another: if something is unclear or uncertain, defer to the wisest choice.

Now that's the way to handle it Elway. I hope he gets that the problem wasn't so much what he said as the sense that saying it in the middle of a winning streak just felt off. But either way it's good to see that he at least realizes that the way he worded things just didn't come across well. And no this isn't simply about "crazy" people reading into it. He messed up by using so much negative language and so little positive about a guy only eight starts into his career. You just don't do that to a young QB. Not in public. Not to the media.

So glad to see him address it, and recognize he messed up.

Like Shannon Sharpe, who used the remarks as a launching point to question Tebow about whether he has the support of the FO, or any number of journalists who wrote about the same topic.
