Default Denver Has No Chance of Making The Playoffs

There is no chance that this once-one-and-four squad can make the playoffs. Its impossible. Denver is going to lose out with a combined score of 1,752 to 5 or something similar. But if the Broncos were to, say, win some games and put themselves in contention, then this is what they are up against:

AFC West

Broncos 6-5
-division record: 3-2
-conference record: 6-3
-remaining schedule: @MIN, CHI, NE, @BUF, KC

Raiders 7-4
-division record: 2-2
-conference record: 5-4
-remaining schedule: @MIA, @GB, DET, @KC, SD

AFC Wild Card Contenders

Pittsburgh: 8-3
-division record: 1-2
-conference record: 6-3
-remaining schedule: CIN, CLE, @SF, STL, @CLE

Baltimore: 8-3
-division record: 3-0
-conference record: 5-2
-remaining schedule: @CLE, IND, @SD, CLE, @CIN

Cincinatti: 7-4
-division record: 2-2
-conference record: 6-3
-remaining schedule: @PIT, HOU, @STL, ARI, BAL

NY Jets: 6-5
-division record: 3-2
-conference record: 5-5
-remaining schedule: @WAS, KC, @PHI, NYG, @MIA

Tennessee: 6-5
-division record: 1-2
-conference record: 4-4
-remaining schedule: @BUF, NO, @IND, JAC, @HOU

Buffalo: 5-6
-division record: 1-3
-conference record: 3-4
-remaining schedule: TEN, @SD, MIA, DEN, @NE

------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's what I think can happen:

Denver finishes on a 4-1 tear, ending up at 10-6 (hard to believe that this is possible after the disasterous start).

Oakland finishes 3-2 ending up at 10-6.

Denver wins the division based on division and conference tie breakers.

Pittsburgh ends up 12-4
Baltimore 12-4
Cincy ends up 9-7
NY ends up 9-7
Tennessee ends up 8-8
Buffalo ends up 7-9

So, you have both Denver and Oakland making the playoffs.

Denver gets a first round match-up with Pittsburgh.

Looking at the schedule, I think we have a good chance to get to 9 wins, but we'll have to hit 10 to hold Oakland off, who I think will win at least 2 more and possibly 3.

What a pass-happy shoot out that would be, huh? Amirite?

Its great that we hold tie breakers over Cincy and NY, because it might come down to head-to-head against one or both of those squads as to whether or not the Broncos get a wild card.

That would be an epic slam-fest.

It could potentially be a Broncos classic slugfest like we saw in 1997. The Tebow media parade with a backdrop of the Pittsburgh fan kingdom...epic.

If we won the division, would they award home field based on record or based on conference title?

Chicago and NE are going to be tough games. Completely winnable if things break right. Buffalo is a schitzo team, no idea who will show up that day. KC is always tough...but motivation to beat pocket sloth? Priceless.

I was wary about the Buffalo game, but they are on the exact opposite trajectory of the Broncos. They have lost 4 straight.

Chicago is nothing without Jay. I expect to win that game. NE will be almost impossible to win, they are playing at an extremely high level right now.

As I recall, people were clamoring for the home field to go to the team with the better record after Seattle won the division at 7-9, but then people stfu when Seattle won against the Saints.

Chicago's defense is pretty damn good, and ST's only has to make one mistake with Hester. NE's defense is horrible. We will move the football. We need to score more than 16 to 20 points, however and VonDoom need to make Brady eat turf on a consistent basis. I'm pretty sure the Broncos wrote the book on how to consistently beat Tom Brady. Hit him, he gets flustered and his accuracy dips.

It sucks the Jets won. We need NE to to need to have that division locked up and looking to rest.

True on both accounts. Id say that the Chicago game is now winnable. Hanie will give the ball away. NE are just clinical on offense.

BUT...the home crowd will be buzzing about that NE game. The playoffs may be in sight and Broncos fans have a particular distaste for the Belichek-Brady road show. That game will be awesome, and the offense is moving forward.

Denver wins the division based on division and conference tie breakers.

Pittsburgh ends up 12-4
Baltimore 12-4
Cincy ends up 9-7
NY ends up 9-7
Tennessee ends up 8-8
Buffalo ends up 7-9

So, you have both Denver and Oakland making the playoffs.

Denver gets a first round match-up with Pittsburgh.
If that were the case the seeding should be

1. New England (presumably) >12-4

2. Baltimore 12-4

3. Denver 10-6

4. Tennessee 8-8

5. Pittsburg 12-4

6. Oakland 10-6

Due to the seeding, NE and BAL would have 1st round byes, and the four remaining (DEN, TEN, PITT, OAK) would play the first round, tourney style, meaning we would play Oakland, would we not? As the 3 plays the 6 seed and the 4 plays the 5 typically yes?

I figured that Houston would beat out Tennessee. Theyre at 8 wins right now.

That would make Denver probably the 4 seed.

But if it worked out that we got to watch Oakland at Denver in a playoff game, that would be fantastic.

I see us going 1-4 in those games. If we get extremely lucky that is.

I assume you believe Oakland will lose to GB and DET, but I'd like to add Miami to the list.

Dolphins have turned things around in November. Their defense has demolished KC, the Skins and Buffalo, keeping them all to single digits, and they barely lost to Dallas.

Oakland loses next week.

?

Houston has 1 game remaining against Indy, dont they? That's 9 wins right there. At the moment they are the 1 seed. Rumors about them going after Jeff Garcia, which would not be that big a drop off from leinart. I dont see Tenn making the playoffs.

At any rate...

Hou @ 12-4
Balt @ 12-4
NE @ 11-5
Denver @ 10-6
Pittsburgh @ 10-6
Oak/Cinci @ 9-7

All of this of course is fantasy. But stranger things have happened.

And I bet it's flexed for NBC, it's not like they are keeping the Ravens Chargers!

our shot against Chicago went up dramatically with Cutler's injury. Hanie is either working through rust, or his playoff performance last season was a fluke.

Buffalo is a team that has shot themselves in the foot and now that the division is almost completely out of their reach are now coasting to the finish.

KC, regardless of the QB situation is a divisional game and always a hard fought game that can go either way. the advantage rests with Denver in potentially facing Orton and their mediocre line. only bad part is that Orton knows how to play against our secondary, so the burden falls on Miller and Doom to plant him into the field.

NE is a game i never count as an automatic loss for Denver. i know different regimes more than likely changes the likely outcomes of these matchups, but it is also likely that NE has that thought in the back of their minds that they don't like to tangle with Denver.

i think we go 4-1 over the rest of the season, but i believe we have a legit shot in all of them.

denver matches up well against any team in the NFL right now, given that they can run the ball and are stopping pretty much everything. cant wait for the NE game, but gotta put them away one at a time.

QFT - "i believe we have a legit shot in all of them".

This sort of optimism is a far cry from what any of us has had in the past few years. It's unreal and it's fun.

Playoffs?!?!? Playoffs!!!

We could get 11 wins this year. Maybe a rematch versus the Bengals at home in the playoffs.

I'm telling you in the playoffs all games get tighter, more pressure, harder to score. We get in the tournament, who knows.

I would love to see the Ravens in round two.

We need to stay away from NE until we can put up 30ish points.

Should be exciting the last 5 games. Certainly the schedule gives Denver a good chance, but Denver's still on the outside looking in. Need Oakland to fade late.
