Very sad. Rip Dan.

I'm anti racing but always hate to see this stuff happen.

Looks like a memorial is happening on cbs at the moment.

That crash was brutal. 15 car crash. Indy racing has lost a lot of its glory but those cars going 230 miles per hour is just asking for a death or two. I believe about 6 of them and one major double amputee accident in the last 15 years. Top of his game and an Indy 500 Champion just a few months back. Last race of the year at Vegas too.

we go to the 500 every year and this guy was a good person and great driver. too short, but for anyone who is shocked that someone could die in indy sport, ... its really fast and 1000'ths of second for decision making. the drivers were saying the track was very dangerous earlier.

my girlfriend is watching espn and crying, shes got alot of friends in that organization. i guess the injuries carried over to alot of the other drivers but nothing too serious. Kanaan was pretty beat up.

I was watching it live and wow, that was some carnage. Its a miracle there was only one casualty and so little injuries.

RIP Dan

RIP.

Racing those cars on an oval track probably needs to stop. People always talked about a wreck like this because everyone knew it was going to happen eventually. 200mph accordion pileup, we are lucky the damage was not worse.

not to be the cold hearted bastard here , but it could have been worse , he could have died by a drunk driver , some junkie with a gun , He died doing what he loved .... That means alot

Tough deal. Sure seems like the second group in the crash could have avoided it but for some reason the third car (behind the two red ones) just pulls a hard left and wipes everyone out. Obviously it's easy to judge in slow motion but man he really cut some people off.

This news really bummed me out and saddened me to no end
I'm a car racing fan, I'm a car nuts myself, and this really blows

My prayers go out to the Wheldon family, friends and loved ones.
Man, he leaves behind a wife and two toddlers.
So sad!

I was there. We could see Turns 1, 3, and 4, but Turn 2 was obstructed by the building in the infield. I saw the start of the collision coming out of Turn 1, and then a couple cars on fire sliding down the back straightaway. Anyone watching on TV got to see what happened and the aftermath of it much better than we did. While killing time as the track was being cleaned up, they were broadcasting interviews from racers (Paul Tracy being one I can remember) and they didn't seem to know Wheldon's condition for quite a while.

When they announced that Wheldon didn't survive the incident and that they weren't going to continue racing, the crowd was silent. It was a palpable sadness that blanketed the attendees. I don't think people knew what to say.

This crash was caused by allowing too many cars to race at once. I don't watch a lot but when i rewatched this I was like man that looked like chaos, people trying to win the race so soon, going 3 wide etc etc.

for what I understand...
According to the drivers themselves, they expressed concerns about the track being way too fast and too many cars for a 1.5 mile track...
