That's the reason why they did it, one can't expect Greg Bird to be hitting at 2015 form early in the season. Bouncing back from labrum surgery is going to take time for Bird. He showed some rust in the Arizona Fall League. He has options, so why not let Bird get his feet under him with no pressure at-bats in the Triple-A International League?

The real problem is what will the Yankees do when Bird is tearing up Triple-A pitching in June and they need to find him big league at-bats?

I understand about Bird, but you have Bird, Austin and Refsnyder fighting for 1 roster spot now when it was 2.
Signing Carter impedes the development of the other 3. We know they can all hit at the minor league level but it's at the ML level where they need to play to develop.

The owner mentioned in post 128 and the owner mentioned in post 129 couldn't be more polar opposites.

Mike Illitch did everything he could to bring a World Series title to Detroit. He kept the team's star players (Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander) and had team payrolls that were only beat by the Dodgers, Yankees and Red Sox. The Tigers went to two World Series after the 2003 low point when they challenged the 1962 Mets for futility. From all accounts Illitch stayed out of the way of management and let them do their thing.

On the flip side, Jeffrey Loria was the scummiest owner in sports, as Jeff Passan details in this poignant piece.

Loria is the type of owner who should never own a sports team. Turned 154 mil into 1.6 billion.

I totally agree. I hope the new owner gives his weasel sidekick David Samson the boot too.

Also, I don't give any credit to Loria for the 2003 championship. I feel like the foundation of that team was built when John Henry owned the club.

I understand the Braves. Their farm system is sick as hell and loaded with a ton of high end guys.
But the Dodgers over the Yankees? Lunacy!

We should move up from 5 to 1 once HOU stops dicking around. They are trying to squeeze us at the last second. But there's only a few more days till ST starts. Hahn isn't gonna budge. If Musgrove isn't coming, then in addition to Tucker and Martes, we will need some other pieces, including hopefully Reed and Whitley.

I can't imagine they ever got to "close" unless Hahn gave up his dream of Robles, so that tells me he prolly substituted Soto in his place and also asked for Severino or Kieboom.

Washington was probably willing to give up Severino and Kieboom if Chicago would take back some salary. Chicago probably indicated it would take back the amount of salary that Washington asked for but it had to be Soto plus one of the others.. Washington then got reluctant about trading Soto and tried to rearrange the deal.

Hahn probably then said if you don't include Soto and Robles is still off the table, you can forget about us taking back salary or even doing the trade.

Hahn is probably waiting a few days into spring training for Rizzo to actually see just how bad his closer options are for himself and is anticipating Rizzo will initiate the next call.

It's no coincidence we just waived a catcher to open up a roster spot.

I'd also like to see NY get back into the picture for Robertson. Hahn should offer to eat most of Robertsons salary the next two years to entice them. I want the savage Blake Rutherford.

Put him in the middle of the lineup right next to Collins (in 2018 or 2019).

Yankees youngster Luis Severino had quite the tutor this offseason -- none other than former Red Sox great and Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez. Severino asked Martinez for help and Martinez worked with his fellow Dominican during five sessions.

I hate seeing pitchers go down. Almost every time you hear a pitcher say they have discomfort or felt something in their arm or shoulder it comes with bad news.

Especially hate seeing pitchers like Reyes go down. His ceiling is top 10 ace in baseball. He's that talented and that good. Last year I saw an outing against the Cubs where Reyes' command was shaky and one of baseball's best lineups still couldn't get good swings on his pitches even with the count in their favor. Reyes wound up throwing 4 1/3 shutout innings of one-hit ball. It really says a lot when a guy is off his game and still can shut down a good lineup on pure stuff.
