They should be gone for the entire year.

Was the ref a child molestor or something?

Human nature at work. We all answer to authority, but who does authority (in this case refs) answer to? Sometimes people feel violence is the only way to keep authority in check. Just look at history.

They should never be allowed to play football again. They could have killed that guy.

Suspended from football for the remainder of their HS playing years and possibly into college if they are good enough to play in college. The only question is, were others on the team involved or were they doing this on their own?

This is kind of a weird thread to call out someone's seriousness. Especially when you look at this from a legal stand point it does constitute battery and therefore he is correct.

Maybe it is. I'm just pointing out a trend in footstep's posts. Since when does being playful constitute "calling out"?

Also, I don't see this why this story is so sensitive. It's not like the kids swung a helmet at the ref or tried to inflict a serious injury. One lowered the shoulder and the second made sure the message sunk in. Whatever happened prior to the play is a gray area too. Suspend them, give them community service, and move on. I've taken bigger hits playing in the schoolyard.

It's a dangerous precedent to set and this is why it has to be punished severely. We've all played sports where we disagree with the refs but you never, ever touched them. These players targeted the ref.

That's not at all the same. You were a willing participant in the organized violence. This ref is earning peanuts in order to make the game possible for those kids and in no way signed up for that. They are wearing pads and a helmet, hitting a guy with no protection from behind like a couple of cowards. They may not have intended to seriously hurt him, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't have happened.

In and of itself, it's a big deal. But it's an even bigger deal in this era of online videos. We are a copycat society. This will most likely happen again now, but they can limit the replications by handing out extremely stiff punishment.
