Default Jon Gruden = Joke

2nd Jon Gruden Era Could Set Raiders Back Years

Back in January, Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis sent a surge of excitement through the fanbase when he signed Jon Gruden to a massive 10-year, $100 million contract—easily the largest in NFL history for a head coach.

However, three months into the Gruden era, trepidation has tinged that excitement. A series of puzzling personnel moves has some wondering whether after nearly a decade in the broadcast booth Gruden's the guy to lead Oakland back to the promised land.

Is he on the verge of vaulting the Silver and Black forward, or are the Raiders at risk of stumbling backward even more after a disappointing 2017?

The latest eyebrow-raising decision came last week, when the team released mercurial punter Marquette King. Some labeled it a cost-cutting move, as releasing him saved the Raiders $2.9 million, per The MMQB's Peter King.

But others, including Vic Tafur of The Athletic, have heard rumblings Gruden wasn't a fan of King's on-field antics:

Yes, the punter is something of an odd duck. And he has indeed accrued multiple 15-yard personal foul penalties over the last couple of years.

But King is also one of the NFL's best. His net average of 42.7 yards per punt ranked fourth in the league in 2017. It's also not like there's much out there among veteran free agents this late in the game.

Were this the only head-scratcher, it could be written off. Chucky doesn't like chuckleheads. The Raiders need cap space for the knee-buckler that will be Khalil Mack's contract extension, as his deal is up after this year. Pick whichever reason works best for you.

It's just the latest one.

I hope he sets them back to 2003. The Raiders being bad for another 10-15 years wouldn't cost be a second of sorrow.

Whatever, Broncos would be better off with Gruden than they are VJ.

I have no issue with a coach getting rid of a player who a) costs too much (more than you value him at) and b) is a potentially bad locker room influence.

Never hire a coach that has been int he broadcast boot for over 10 years, that is just crazy. How many 100 hour work weeks has he done since he left coach? I would bet to say ZERO!!

The Raiders are most likely gonna have the 2nd best record in the AFC West the chargers are the team to beat.

No way. They could cut ties with VJ and move on much easier than the raiders can with Gruden.

Right now, we have to be careful about the coaches of other teams being a joke. It would be like a guy stuffing his pants with a sock, making fun of tiny Asian penises.

It would be just like that.

I don't know if Broncos fans should be making fun of other teams' head coaches.

Gruden hasn’t coached in 10 years, and he had a losing record (.459) over his final 6 years. Basically, he hasn’t done anything since 2003. Then the Raiders give him $100,000,000 over the next 10 years.

Seriously, this. I'd say it's a coin-flip whether or not he makes it through the season. Glass houses.

As a HC he has a .540 winning percentage. One could argue he took two teams to the same SB.

For that price?

VJ is just a young coach with three years left on a relatively small contract.

You would have to expect greatness like Walsh, Belichick, or Shula for 100 million. That’s ridiculous for Gruden.

He took HOF coach Dungy’s perennial Super Bowl contenders to the SB in 2002 and hasn’t done **** since.

VJ doesn’t even know basic rules of the game.

Gruden May be a clown but VJ is a clown who sprays his own face when using squirting flowers.

I like Gruden, especially compared to who we have, but damn some of you really are nuts. I expect his return to be similar to Joe Gibbs' return to Washington's: average and forgettable, but better than what they've been used to.

'Average' looks really really really good right about now.

But VJ is not making personnel decisions and isn't locked into a deal that will be impossible to exit for a few years. This isn't about VJ vs. Gruden; Gruden is running the entire franchise and will be for the foreseeable future. And his moves so far have been, as the article notes, perplexing. Gruden the personnel man thinks it's still 2008, signing a bunch of washed-up geriatrics to establish his "culture."

Gruden will be better than JDR. I know he’s polarizing, but I liked Gruden as an announcer and enjoyed his QB Camp. It sucks he’s coaching the Raiders, again, because now I have to root against him.
