He's also had a shoulder injury and he has pins in his collarbone, but it's not the number of questions, it's people's perception of the differing severity of the questions that dominate this discussion. Observe:

Allen: 1) Accuracy 2) Injuries 3) Competition 4) Production
Rosen: 1) Durability 2) Mobility 3) Passion for the game 4) Attitude 5) Background
Mayfield:1) Height 2) System 3) Off field 4) Talent Imbalance 5) Conference defenses
Darnold: 1) Ball security 2) Age

The guy with the fewest questions is Darnold. But how big are those questions? If he turns out to be a Jay Cutleresque turnover machine, that could derail his career.

I look at evaluating QB's different than most I think. I look at everything except physical talent as a factor existing within a matrix of development, in other words, from a holistic perspective. Within that development matrix, each of these guys is on some kind of trajectory or pathway. Whatever has gone into their development so far, has to be considered in light of what their new environment is going to be like, and how much it significantly differs from what they've already been through.

In some cases, the "soft" factors involved, which include things like their personal upbringing and background, and their history with personal relationships with coaches and teammates, and their off the field concerns may be more important than quantifiable measurables like size and arm strength. You also have people ascribing arbitrary values to different pros or cons. Take for example the issue of accuracy. It's repeated often that QB's who don't complete 60% of their passes in college rarely do it in the pros. This is noted as a major red flag. OK...fine. However, that stat is equally balanced by the small number of shorter QB's who succeed. It also fails to really explain the problem in a way that sheds enough light on the issue to know if it's a concern in any one situation. What factors lead to it? What kind of offense did the guy play in? Who were his coaching mentors? DId they work on his mechanics? What level of talent surrounded him on the field? On and on we could go...my point is, stats alone are a poor indicator of things unless we consider qualitative measures as well, and most people don't give that the credence it deserves.

Allen grew up on a farm, in a tiny community with no distractions, far from the kind of limelight enjoyed by guys like Darnold and Rosen. He worked in 105-110 degree heat in long sleeve shirts...developing an old-fashioned work ethic. He is a late bloomer, a guy who grew 58 pounds in two years, adding muscle to a 180-pound frame. Nobody at all gave him even a sniff. Even the Jr. College program he got into, he landed there through a family connection. He emailed every D1 college in the country before Wyoming decided to risk a scholarship on him. I'm guessing that his tiny high school didn't provide him much in the way of solid coaching, and he played with pretty piss poor support in Laramie. He seems to have the work ethic you want, and I'm not sure there's enough attention paid to that. That said, he's a longer term project than either Rosen or Darnold, but I think his ceiling is higher.

Who knows if any of them will work out?

Darnold is going #1 unless the Browns pull a Browns. I am warming up to Rudolph more and more if the Broncos want a QB.

I see Brady, not peyton. He looks like brady, moves like him. Throws like him, even runs like him. Quick throw motion, on target and smooth. I see Brady all the way. Id be fine if he is like either of them (assuming he is playing for us)

After listening to some of you guys, reading on each, and watching the pro days I'm leaning towards Rosen if we take one at 5, which I'm really hoping we don't. I would have no problem with them taking Rudolph later on. I'd say it would be great to trade back, like with Buffalo for 2 picks, but I still want that 5 for the possibility of Chubb. DON'T GIVE UP PICKS TO MOVE UP FROM 5.

I didn’t really want to do it, just because it’s never happened before. But as I passed this mock draft around to scouts and execs and coaches over the last few days, I didn’t get much pushback. In fact, I actually got some approval. So what we’ve got here: Quarterbacks going 1-2-3-4.

“I don’t think it’s too aggressive,” said one scouting director. “If you don’t go up and get them, you may never get one.”
Quote:
1. Cleveland: Sam Darnold, QB, USC
Darnold is not perfect, but he’s still a damn good prospect. And when GM John Dorsey is looking for a leader he’s comfortable tying his professional future to, I think this 20-year-old is the guy.

2. Buffalo (projected trade with N.Y. Giants): Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
The Bills have done a nice job building capital for a bold swing. This is one. Allen’s potential is limitless, and his big frame and arm are made for Buffalo, though he has a ways to go.

3. N.Y. Jets (from Indianapolis): Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA
I like the personality fit and on-field match between OC Jeremy Bates and Rosen, who’s seen as a “not for everyone” type of kid. He is the most evolved and natural passer in this group.

4. Denver (projected trade with Cleveland, owner of Houston’s pick): Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
Denver had Mayfield at the Senior Bowl, and they have a starter, in Case Keenum, who lines up nicely with his style. So the Broncos throw another dart at the QB board.

5. Cleveland (projected trade with Denver): Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State
Imagine that. Cleveland gets its quarterback at 1, moves out of 4, and somehow still lands the player that most scouts regard as the best in the draft.

There's no way in hell we're taking Mayfield, just not happening at 4.

I hope we draft Baker. I think he's a franchise QB and would be a great player for us, but I just want to see the meltdown on this board if it happens.

If we trade up for Mayfield I will light myself on fire. If they're going to take him, just take him at 5. Good grief.

I don't think that's the argument. Just that it's something apparently smart front offices opt to invest in. Possibly only to not go into a draft with such a desperate need.

That is completely the argument otherwise we wouldn't be talking about it. Two years of that salary won't kill the broncos, but I do hope that, similar to Philly, we play the young guy right away (should we draft him in the top 5).

The issue with the conparison is that it only really holds up in terms of physical tools, and physical tools aren’t what led to Manning being an all-time great.
