Dave Dravecky was more unlucky. At least Saunders still has his arm.

Trevor Story is the surprise of Rockies camp. We all pretty much knew that he would be good enough to make the opening day roster. The question was whether it would be worth holding him back for three weeks, so that we could extend his controlled time with the Rockies. The wise decision would have been to make do with whatever we could plug in at SS (Christhian Adams, maybe), and then bring Story up after the three weeks was up. That allows us to control him through 2022. Now, we're likely to lose that 2022 season. Doesn't seem to make sense.

That's a valid point. Adames has the glove to do the job on a short-term basis.

Let me say this though about Trevor Story, his minor league career has been characterized by peaks and valleys. He emerged as a big-time prospect in 2012, but took a step back in 2013 and then struggled in his first Double-A exposure in 2014. Then he bounced back last year with a 20 HR-22 SB showing in the Pacific Coast League, but it wasn't without some warts -- 141 strikeouts.

After all he's been through, I think the Rockies would be thrilled to death if it's 2021 and Story is still manning the shortstop position. My opinion is that Story is not the caliber of prospect that you make service time decisions for, you just hope he makes it period.

I think the Rockies did the right thing in starting Story at shortstop on opening day.

1. It sends a message to the players and the fans that the team will put out its best lineup to start the season, regardless of contract issues. Story has been rewarded for performing well in the spring.

2. It gives the team time to evaluate Story before the Reyes situation is resolved. If Story struggles the Rockies may be more inclined to keep Reyes when Reyes' inevitable suspension is up.

3. Related to #1, the Rockies need to get off to a good start to get the attention of Denver sports fans. With the Avs and Nuggets out of the playoffs the Rockies will be the center of the local sports scene for at least a month (until the nfl draft and bronco mini camp anyway).

Devastating blow for the Diamondbacks to lose A.J. Pollock, their second-best hitter just days before the season.

The Rockies will end up signing Story to an extension and then trading him like they do with everyone else.

Despite bad ownership, the Rockies aren't in dire straits. Baseball America ranks their farm system as No. 6 in baseball and they are one of the rare systems that has potential major league starters at six different positions.

The big question though is going to be pitching again. Chad Bettis is a solid piece, now they have to hope and pray that three make it out of the Jon Gray, Eddie Butler, Jeff Hoffman, Kyle Freeland, Antonio Senzatela, Miguel Castro mix and I don't really have a strong feeling about any of them.

With Arenado blocking him, Ryan McMahon might be the piece they can use to get a premium young arm, but his power plays at 1B and the Rockies don't have a 1B.

The Rockies issue is never acquiring talent. It's developing it fully, maintaining it, paying it long term and turning it into a winner.

They are adept at developing and acquiring position players, I will give them that.

They turned Matt Holliday into Carlos Gonzalez and Ian Stewart into D.J. Lemahieu. I liked their FA signings of Nick Hundley and Gerardo Parra.

Todd Helton played out his mega contract in Denver. Gonzalez signed a team-friendly seven-year, $80 million contract with the Rockies in 2011 and Scott Boras is his agent. Boras never does those contracts so I will give them some credit. They're not the Oakland A's who are the poster team for not keeping or retaining any of their stars.

But what frustrates me is their inability to find value pitching on the FA market, maybe Coors effect has something to do with that. The FA signings of Jason Motte and Chad Qualls to two-year contracts this winter did not give me a good impression of Jeff Bridich in his ability to manipulate the market for relievers. That's where a GM makes his money, building a bullpen.

Wishful thinking, buy not.
Trevor Story might end up being a superstar.

Congrats to Trevor Story. First player in MLB history to hit 2 HRs during an Opening Day debut.

Justin Verlander took a no-hitter into the 6th inning in Detroit's opener versus Miami.

JV looks sharp for the Tigers though....5 1/3 innings of no hit ball.

Tigers lead 5-1 in the 6th inning.

Best baseball player in the world in Mike Trout, and it's gonna be a long, cold, dark season.
