Default The case against Bolles

Alfred Williams says he should be cut right now; Stink says if Bolles were a 3rd or 4th rounder he would surely be gone.

*Bolles only played one year of FBS football at Utah; led the nation in penalties in 2016. Led NFL in holding calls in 2017.

*Very poor Wonderlic score pre-2017 draft; slow learner.

*Broncos drafted Bolles at pick #20 in 2017, while Ryan Ramczyk (pick #32) from O-lineman factory Wisconsin was nearly across the board rated as the #1 offensive tackle in that year's draft. Ramcyzk went on to make NFL All-Rookie Team in 2017 with New Orleans.

A simply horrible pick by the Broncos. Should we let him go or possibly try a salvage project with Bolles at guard?

He’s too slow to play LT.
He’s been exposed!

A horrible pick in a long run of horrible picks by a feckless, clueless, seemingly directionless front office. The Broncos' 2017 draft was an abomination. I don't know whether this year's good draft was because of organizational/philosophical changes that were made or if they just got lucky lol.

Why do posters keep using Ramcyzk as this example of a player DEN should have drafted?
He played LT for NO and was horrible. They quickly moved him to RT. That's where he is today for NO. Armstead is NO LT.

OK then, Ramcyzk could have switched and become a fine RT for Broncos. Still a better outcome than the worthless Bolles.

Ramcyzk was also a major health risk with his hip coming out.

Saints forced to shuffle Ryan Ramczyk to right side, kick Andrus Peat out to left tackle due to injury

Saints rookie Ryan Ramczyk right on track -- on either side of offensive line

Oh well, if the media claim it was an injury issue then why hasnt he ever gone back? Yeah, cause he sucked. Ramczyk was terrible at LT and thats why Amrstead is there and has been for quite some time.
I watched the games last year where he was in at LT. He was bad.
We talked about it on this site.

Our drafting has been simply brutal during Elways reign as GM.
You have to wonder whether the F.O. raid Pats legendary drinks cabinet each draft weekend such is the bewildering array of poor decisions made.
Lets hope the last draft class keeps on trending upwards and that Chubb doesn't end up as Robert Ayers 2.0.

Why not do something like make Heurman gain 50 lbs and play left tackle. It worked for Bellicheat.

Everybody said, got to go tackle because of dire need. See what need drafting does. Move him to RT

I remember Virgil Green saying he could beef up and play left tackle before the Broncos let him go.

There needs to be house cleaning from top to bottom.
This also isn't exactly the best draft for LT. There's some pretty good ones, but its a thinner draft than usual.

Hopefully MUG can get in here and put us at ease a bit.

Did Bolles have any issues before or after the holding call?

He's adequate as a run blocker though isn't he? I really wish this offense would stop trying to pretend it's a passing offense.

Especially right when they get it going! They'll have like five runs that really seem to have teams up against the ropes and then they pass. And it's not even play action, it's like Keesum in the shotgun. I don't understand...

The case for Bolles:

1. He has excellent feet, athleticism, and tenacity. Two of those are the key traits for an NFL caliber LT and are very difficult to find.

2. He played one year of D1 football, and he's early in his second year in the NFL. He doesn't have a ton of experience compared to more polished OTs that are sometimes drafted. He was always going to be a developmental type guy.

3. We took him late in the 1st Round. Elite LTs go in the Top 5-10 picks. Bolles is not and will likely never be an "elite" LT, which is what everyone seems to expect he should be. Right now he's above average at run blocking, average at pass blocking, and probably will eventually cap out as an above average LT across the board when he gets more seasoning.

4. LTs are hard to find. Without Bolles, we don't have an O-lineman with the feet and athleticism to even try and play LT. Hope he doesn't get injured, or we'll really see how bad it can be.

5. He tends to struggle, in a highly visible (tackling the pass rusher) manner at least twice a game. On the majority of his snaps, he does his job. On the plays he struggles, it's bad. And it snowballs on him as he needs to work on the mental side of losing a rep.

6. Once again, after one year of D1 football, and only one full year of NFL football, he's shown to be a tough, aggressive, and athletic starting LT in the NFL. He'll get better. It's kind of remarkable he's been as decent as he has since the jump, all things considered. Maybe it's his learning disability, maybe it's just being raw, but he'll improve with time, reps, and weight training.

7. Every OT gets beat badly at times. Every OT has penalties. Agreed that Bolles has too many holding penalties. He needs to improve. I think you have to look at the totality of his snaps and determine if he's good enough, and if he has any potential to grow further and improve. I think it's factual that he has been good enough, and with his athleticism and his rawness, I think he can further improve. Bolles is not even in my Top 10 of things I'm concerned about with this team.

I assume people are using the term front office because they donít believe Elway is making all decisions in a vacuum without considering the input of others. Yes, Elway has final say but that doesnít mean he isnít relying heavily on input from others in the front office.
