One possible solution for that would be a “salary floor”.

Yeah, it's something they should consider. Or maybe a certain % of revenues have to be spent on player salaries? If such a thing would be possible?

The percentage of revenues spent on player salaries is always a point of discussion that the MLBPA brings up in CBA discussions. I don't know how they put it into action though after agreeing on a figure.

The 2021 CBA is most likely going to be the most contentious discussion since 1994. I definitely see the MLBPA fighting for an earlier free agency or trying to get more money in the pockets of young players since the industry values their cheap labor so much.

Sox looking at another Machado buddy, Jon Jay.

This is gonna look really dumb if they sign Jay in addition to Alonso and Machado doesn't come.

I get that there's a hole in CF but it's a short term hole. Robert will be manning the CF spot starting in 2020...Jay should only get a 1 year bridge deal.

Edit: 1 year 4m deal.

Boras may eventually be boxed into a 5 year deal at some point.
More and more teams are trying to win cheaply. They'd rather spend a bunch of resources on player they get multiple years of team control through rather than just pushing some big pile of money in front of a player who won't push them to the next level.

Really not cash flow purposes. Jerry is just letting Paxson tank now.

Machado is holding it up more than Harper.

2 of the biggest and youngest FA prizes in MLB history and they have a limited market of about 3 teams each. That's crazy to me.

I read today our offer is 7/245 and it's the lead offer

MM gets the AAV, Sox get the limited years

We also just paid 12m for his friends to be there with him in 2019 since true contention won't be until 2020, so sign already.

I don't see NYY offering 7/245....they might offer 5 years but I don't see 7.

Today we've been hearing something would be announced tomorrow.

That would be nice but I wouldn't be shocked if it gets strung out longer.

Yeah I heard it's us or PHI at this point with Chicago in the lead.

Hahn has to get this done. There is no excuse and I don't want to hear about the "stupid money" thing. PHI has already made substantial signings this year.

Outside of some very short term deals and signing Machado's friends the Sox haven't really made a big investment.

We have a huge hole at 3rd base and Moncada cannot play there.

Get Manny signed now! Once that is done our middle infield will be set for years with Machado at 3rd, Anderson at SS and Moncada or Madrigal at 2nd.

With Eloy coming in this year at LF and Robert manning CF in 2020 after a one year bridge (Jay) the only other spot is RF and we have a very deep group of OFers in the system with Adolfo, Rutherford, Basabe and Gonzalez all competing for that job by 2020.

This is a good example of how effed up MLB is right now:

Quote:
The Yankees signed Troy Tulowitzki — and 15 other teams tried to sign Tulowitzki, reportedly — because he represents the one thing teams love more than anything: Something for nothing. Machado is in his own little world, but why spend money on Jed Lowrie or DJ LeMahieu when you could give Tulowitzki the league minimum and still claim to be trying to win? He is the perfect addition for the austerity era Yankees. He’s dirt cheap, he has name value, and he’s an excuse to pass on more expensive players. It’s not fair to single out the Yankees here because this applies to every team. If the report is true and 15 teams in addition to the Yankees pursued Tulowitzki, it means more teams were in on him than are reportedly in on Machado and Harper combined. Teams love something for nothing. They’d rather pay nothing for potential production than pay a lot for guaranteed production. Baseball is beyond screwed up when more teams are pursuing late career Tulowitzki than peak Machado and Harper. The Yankees should not let Tulowitzki stand in the way of other infield additions, even someone like Freddy Galvis or Josh Harrison, but it seems they will. They’ve made it pretty clear they view him as their starting shortstop and I don’t think Tulowitzki would’ve picked the Yankees without some promise of playing time. The Yankees won the “something for nothing” lottery with Tulowitzki. Now the question is will he give them something, or nothing?

Some of the stuff circulating today suggests Machado to CHW and Harper to PHI, both pretty soon. Not a big surprise.
