So the players are at that spot where the rubber meets the road, and they believe they have most of the say on what happens during a game.

So it's rare (in my opinion) that players really thing that coaches are causing them to lose games.

Should the Broncos stick with him? Yes, I think he should get one more year. If you're going to hire a first-time coach, I think you have to commit to at least 3 years unless the wheels completely fall off early. If you're not going to do that, then why are you hiring a first-time coach? Recycle one of the retreads that are out there.

Norv Turner could get another NFL coaching job. Yowzers!
This is probably the question people most wanted answered... Great response and well reasoned.

That's a good question. I honestly have not given this any thought, but if we agree that Pat Bowlen was a great leader whose leadership helped the team get into all those Super Bowls and eventually win two of them in the 1990s, then it would be silly to suggest that the unsettled leadership situation has no impact.

I'm sure that it must, but it's hard to gauge how much and where the impact shows up.

We should've scheduled this at the same time as a game day thread so he got a better taste.

Are you still an every Sunday viewer of NFL football, or has there been any burnout experienced from being around the game?

I actually played 6 years in the NFL!! Don't cheat me out of one of my years. :-)

Yes, I was mostly a special teams guy, but I was also a good learner. It helped my career that I had three different head coaches (Dan Reeves, Wade Phillips and Mike Shanahan). Every time a new coach came in, we all had to learn a new system, and I prided myself on learning it faster and better than my peers.

In the complex NFL of today, I think my study habits would give me a persistent advantage and might have prolonged my career.

When you were playing college football, did you think you had a realistic shot at playing in the NFL?

I think most players love the money AND the game. We have to think about what kids dream about. 12-years old run around dreaming about throwing or catching the game-winning touchdown, and being celebrated. They dream about being rich, and buying their mother a new home. The money is as much a part of the dream as the success on the field.

Then when you get to the NFL, the love for the game is there, but you discover that it's a one-sided love affair. The players are expected to love the game. The front office is expected to love the business. Well the players have to do business with the front office, and that's not a game.

So players get forced to divide their passion. They have to love the game AND the money and find a way to stay motivated by both.

No, I did not even think about playing in the NFL. I went to Southwest Texas State, and I was a decent player, but not great. Then I had a great senior year and one scout came to my school and told me if I kept it up, I might have a chance to play at the next level.

So that was it. At age 22, was the first time that I ever even had the first real inkling that I might have a chance to play in the NFL. Unlike my 15-year-old son, who has been convinced since age 8 that he's going to become a pro.

I say, "Not with those grades, you're not!" :-) !

Here's a little poem, I've written.

I hated the Raiders.
I hate the Raiders
I will always hate the Raiders.
I love to see the Raiders lose.

I hated the Patriots.
I hate the Patriots.
I will always hate the Patriots.
I love to see the Patriots lose.

Tell him to hang out here. We're a bunch of great influences - Meth Alley and Myrtle Beach, notwithstanding.

This is one that several have wanted asked, in the threads leading up to this.

Better Broncos uniform? The old D? Or the new, futuristic horse head?

Most memorable game for me was Kansas City at Mile High Stadium in 1993. I blocked a punt in the 4th quarter that set-up the winning touchdown. It was the biggest play of my career and a cherished memory.

I show it to my son to try to get some cred from him.

He won't take football advice from me.

Says my techniques are outdated.

Says I don't know what I'm talking about.

Punk.

No back then they were just the Patriots, not the Cheetahs.

Once they became the Cheetahs, the hatred grew.

The Raiders hatred just came naturally. Sorta like I can't stand the way dog **** smells.
