The Giants have taken the lead in the Stanton sweepstakes.

Hand him over, Beantown you greedy bastard. I need Devers or Benintendi. MOAR savages. You can't get something for nothing.
The Red Sox are just exploring all options. Signing Eric Hosmer or Carlos Santana only costs them money and two non first-round picks.

It would cost them ALOT more money than the slightly less than 40m that Abreu would make the next two years.

Just a bad fit for a trade IMO.

What you are hearing is the same thing I've been hearing for awhile now in general: Devers and Benintendi are off limits to any and all trades. Just not happening.

If Sox can't land the big bat at 1B, they'll likely turn to the Marlins/Stanton. The Marlins are not in a position to demand either of those guys in a trade if the Sox are willing to take on his entire salary.

I agree that the talent coming back will be less, but Stanton is in no real position of power to enforce anything.

MIA definitely would not get any of those guys if you are gonna eat almost 300 million dollars. Ofcourse, if he goes to the Giants then even Stanton won't be an option. And I'm not sure Stanton & 300m is worth not giving up one of those guys for Abreu and just 36-40m for the next few years. You could even extend him a few years beyond that and the cost still would not be in the same galaxy. I realize they are willing to pay the payroll tax but that gap is pretty big. You're getting a .300 guy with 30 HRs for a decent salary and relatively short commitment.

Groome and some scrubs doesn't get you there.

Actually, Santana is projected to command a free agent contract in the $40 million range. First base is one of the deepest free agent positions this winter.

I don't see why the Red Sox would trade one of their two most valuable commodities (Devers, Bentintendi) and create a hole at 3B or LF in order to fill the 1B spot. It doesn't make any sense.

Dammit balero don't rain on my parade.

BOS finished last in HRs. One guy isn't gonna make a huge difference. If we sent them Abreu and Garcia, that's an additional 50 HRs they are adding plus average as well.

For both guys it could be worth Devers or Benintendi plus some other prospects.

Ummmm, it was the loss of just one player (Papi) that essentially caused the problem.

Avisail Garcia is fool's gold. He's a very aggressive ground ball hitter that benefitted from a high BABIP to have a career year.

Here's his batted ball breakdown from 2017:
Ground ball: 213 Line drive: 83 Fly ball: 113

Gotta believe that's a negotiation tactic. No way are they eliminating a top bidder. Could see the Angels, though. He and Trout would be quite the duo (assuming Ohtani even lives up to the hype and stays healthy).

I wonder what the minimum would be for him to become an unrestricted free agent? Just one year? Maybe he'll sign in some random spot and built credibility before signing a monster deal.

I can understand wanting his own people in there but this was an especially dick move. The PR costs of it alone are prolly not worth doing that to this guy.

Even the way he started clearing the way for his own people was ****ed up.
