Default The Kirk Cousins Pipe Dream

I personally would love to have him, but there are so many reasons why this is a fantasy that would never happen.

1. You can't have two guys making $22 million plus on your roster, that is unsustainable long term. The projected salary cap is going to be $178 m, assume Cousins gets $28 million are you really going to spend 29% of your cap space on two guys...that is absurd.

2. Doesn't work with our Cap Situation

Right now we are projected at about $23 million according to over the cap, if we add in the $11 million from this year as a carryover we stand at about $34 million. Has everyone forgotten that we still have to resign Matt Paradise (our only good offensive lineman) and Shaq Barrett who are both URFA after this season? Assume the minimum following deals for these guys

Paradise: 4 yr/$36 m with $20 m guaranteed ($ 9 million per/year)
Barrett: 4 yr/ $28 m with $18 m guaranteed ( $7 m per/yr)

I realize there are structuring tricks that could be done to lessen the cap affect, but I won't speculate on that.

Now our cap space is just about $9 million and we still have to sign rookies, which is a pool of about $6 m annually.

3. Salary Cap is Based on League Revenues

The figure listed on overthecap.com assumes that there is an increase in league revenue and they have factored that in. With the league viewership down it is possible that the salary cap either stays what it is this year or goes down, talk about getting caught flat footed, this would suck.

The only options:

The only option to possible get Cousins is as follows.

1. Convert Miller's 2018 Salary to a Signing Bonus

Doing this allows the Broncos to take his 2018 Salary of $17,585,000 (amount eligible of the $22 to be restructured), converts it to a signing bonus that allows the Broncos to spread that cap hit over the remaining contract years.

Miller costs us $9.2 m this year, saving $13 m

2. Cut Menelik Watson

Saves $4.7 m ($2.6 m cap penalty)

3. Cut CJ Anderson

Saves us $4.5 m on a mediocre back

So here is where we stand after all this

2018 Cap: $23 m
2017 Rollover: $11 m
2018 moves: $22.2 m

Total Space: $56.2 million ($51.7 if you don't cut CJ)

Paradise: $9 m
Barrett: $7 m

Total $16 m

Remaining $40 m ($35 m keeping CJ)

Cousins: 5 yr/$140 m, $80 m guaranteed ($28 m p/yr)

$40-$28 = $12 m

With that $12 m we have to fix our RT, RG and RB positions and sign rookies. Draft is deep with RB (I say we tank to maximize our chances at Saquon Barkley who is better than Ezekiel Elliot) and is horribly poor on RT and RG ( Quentin Nelson - ND is the best guard and Mike McGlinchy - ND is the best tackle, both gone really early).

Add into this that Roby and Shane Ray are both FA after next year so we have to plan long term, and it just doesn't make any sense for us to go after Cousins. We would be way better off going for DB on a 2 yr contract thereby giving him a chance to win and keeping our costs down than to ever go after KC.

It could happen if that is what Denver wanted. They could cut a few players that they probably should anyway.

With the kind of money he’ll demand he better be able to carry this team when things break down and they will because we’ll have to let some talent go in order to have the cap room to sign him.

Cousins is good, but not worth the highest salary. Let Jax pay him that.

I didn't read that, but it looks well thought out. I just want to have a chance to contend, our QB's suck, so that hurts those chances mightly

Jags are a better team with Coughlin making moves. Elways got to perform some magic to get him here.

Iíd choose them over Denver too.

So it's McCarron or bust then! Or draft yet another QB.
Or just go with Paxil even though he's a massive bust.

You can sign Cousins. It's more than doable.
I notice you hypo doesn't have DT being traded or cut.
How much does that move save?

I wouldn't. I'd puke in my mouth a little bit every time I put that god awful uniform on.

DT canít be cut until 2019. His base salary is only 8.5 for these 2 years...his option bonus was moved to now.

Not much point in investing in a QB if they are throwing to Fowler in the WR1 spot.

It's unpopular because everyone loves him, but cutting Talib saves 10-11 mil.

Cutting Talib, CJ, and Watson clears nearly 20 mil, thats enough to fit in Cousins right there if you put his cap hit under 20 in year 1.

Also, who is all going to be in the bidding war for Cousins if he hits FA? Jags, Jets, maybe Cards (i think they draft someone instead), and Broncos presumably.

Also, i dont think we'll sign Barrett. Gonna be quite impossible to pay all of Ray, Barrett and Von top dollar. Wouldnt be against using one of our top picks on an edge rusher.

Paradis certainly needs to be kept though.

I knew you'd be the 1st to put the kibosh on a DT trade.
There are other options than DT. Sanders, Henderson will be back. And then there's the draft. A franchise QB is worth ten times what a #1 WR is worth. Sorry, they just are. Just look at Brady. But if they can't trade him contractually, then it's a mute point.
DEN better figure it out and figure it out fast.
I actually think Elways best option is to make sure that Luck is completely healthy, that he doesn't have a long term issue, and then trade the farm for him.
Make an offer at the drunk owner he just can't refuse and he can rebuild his team. That is the only way that,
A. You get a franchise level QB, who can win NOW.
B. You keep the defensive players happy and willing to stay.

87 straight games brotha! But the cap hit to cut is insane until 2019. Would have to be a trade

There is no one on this roster that DCs are even remotely concerned about other than DT. Add in a team with zero TE threats and itís a cake walk for DCs. Sanders and Henderson not close to WR1s.

Problem is this staff does not use him correctly. Gruden explained that precisely Monday night.

Don't be a lame ass franchise and start picking up retreads.

That's what the Chiefs used to do.

Do you want to be the Chiefs? You're halfway there with the all-defense/no-offense strategy.

Aaron Rodgers is a pipe dream. Cousins, at the price he's going to be asking for? Pass. He's a good QB, but not worth highest paid in the league money.
