NFL.com's Top 50 Free Agents

1 - Kirk Cousins QB - Vikings

Due in part to an obsessive work ethic, Cousins has improved every year in the league. His numbers over 48 games since taking over for Robert Griffin III three years ago rival those of Aaron Rodgers during that time span. Quarterbacks of his caliber, durability and commitment level simply don't reach the open market.

2 - Drew Brees QB - Saints

Brees benefits from a dynamic ground attack and can't drive the ball like he used to, but he remains one of the most valuable assets in the league at age 39. By all accounts, he's a lead-pipe lock to re-sign with the Saints.

3 - Le'Veon Bell RB - Steelers

The NFL's premier all-around back of the past four years will likely draw the franchise tag for the second consecutive offseason if he doesn't reach a long-term deal with the Steelers.

4 - Demarcus Lawrence DE - Cowboys

Among the leaders in sacks and tackles for loss in a breakout season, Lawrence will enter the 2018 campaign as a 26-year-old building block. The Cowboys have made it clear that he will be tagged if no agreement is reached by the deadline.

5 - Allen Robinson WR - Bears

One of the league's most dangerous deep threats in 2015, Robinson followed a disappointing 2016 season with a torn ACL in 2017. Suddenly standing in a Super Bowl window, Jacksonville will consider applying the tag to retain Robinson if necessary.

6 - Sheldon Richardson DT - Free Agent

Richardson's Pro Bowl talent may be undeniable, but he's totaled just 2.5 sacks in his past 30 games and will be viewed by many teams as a character risk. He's expected to reach the open market.

7 - Sammy Watkins WR - Chiefs

On one hand, he's a 24-year-old with obvious talent and No. 1 receiver potential. On the other hand, even a brilliant offensive mind like Sean McVay couldn't bring out that potential last season.

8 - Andrew Norwell G - Jaguras

Undrafted out of Ohio State, Norwell has developed into a Pro Bowl-caliber performer in a league that finds it increasingly difficult to field a quality offensive line. With so much capital tied up in Matt Kalil and Trai Turner, the Panthers might have their hands tied with Norwell.

9 - Kyle Fuller CB - Bears

We might be higher on Fuller than most after watching him lead the league in passes defensed last year, per Pro Football Focus. Could he be the next Casey Hayward, making his former team look silly for allowing him to fly the nest after his rookie contract?

10 - Case Keenum QB - Broncos

Last year, Keenum settled for a $2 million contract in free agency and didn't even crack our Top 101. This time, he has the opportunity to earn life-changing money few journeymen ever see. He's a solid bet to start somewhere in Week 1.

11 - Malcolm Butler CB - Titans

A relative down year and Shakespearean-tragedy ending to his Patriots career in the Super Bowl could keep Butler's price down. Smart teams will pounce, knowing he was a top-10 cornerback in 2015 and '16.

12 - Trumaine Johnson CB - Jets

Physical, above-average starting cornerbacks get paid like superstars in free agency. That's why the Rams gave Johnson $30.6 million over the last two years as their franchise player.

13 - Lamarcus Joyner DB - Rams

Every team could use a player like Joyner, a former cornerback who is comfortable covering the slot, playing the deep part of the field and tackling well at the line of scrimmage. He's like Honey Badger in Arizona, without the cool nickname.

14 - Teddy Bridgewater QB - Jets

He's either ranked way too high or way too low. With a great combination of smarts, positive game tape and leadership, Bridgewater could have a higher long-term ceiling than even Kirk Cousins. But there's no telling how Teddy will look two years removed from a devastating knee injury.

15 - Sam Bradford QB - Cardinals

Like Bridgewater, Bradford is a mystery because of his knee. He put up a quietly-impressive 2016 season and a breathtaking Week 1 performance before he was put on the shelf for nearly the rest of the season.

16 - Bashaud Breeland CB - Panthers

Breeland is streaky, but few young cornerbacks with his talent get to free agency in their prime.

17 - Nate Solder T - Free Agent

Solder is virtually the only true starting left tackle available in free agency. He can strike it rich if he wants to leave the Patriots.

18 - Dontari Poe DT - Free Agent

Poe showed in Atlanta he could hold up as an every-down player after losing weight and making a consistent impact in the passing game. He's not a star, but he is a starter.

19 - Justin Pugh OL - Free Agent

Pugh timed free agency poorly, coming off a season marred by a back injury and playing out of position at tackle. But he's a proven quality guard, and those are tough to find.

20 - Zach Brown LB - Free Agent

A talented tease early in his career, Brown has emerged in the last two seasons as one of the league's premier run-stuffing inside linebackers.

21 - Muhammad Wilkerson DE - Packers

Wilkerson's attitude problems forced the Jets' hand, but he does fall under Bill Parcells' "planet" theory. There are only so many humans on the planet with Wilkerson's blend of size, length and athleticism. There will be coaches and executives acting on the firm belief that they can draw out the 2015 Pro Bowler's immense potential.

22 - Carlos Hyde RB - Free Agent

There are weeks in which he looks like a tackle-breaking terror with intriguing ability in the passing game. Unfortunately, there might be just as many weeks filled with negative runs, dropped passes and nagging injuries.

23 - Jimmy Graham TE - Packers

Graham is still earning Pro Bowl nods due to his red-zone prowess and name recognition, but it's been four years since he's played at that consistent level.

24 - Kenny Vaccaro S - Free Agent

Billed as a hybrid safety-corner-linebacker early in his career, Vaccaro has never lived up to his potential in New Orleans. Will he find a system that hides his coverage weaknesses and plays to his strengths?

25 - Eric Reid S - Free Agent

Can Reid continue to play with abandon as a back-end enforcer with concussion concerns, a torn biceps and a PCL sprain on his medical chart?

26 - Nigel Bradham LB - Free Agent

A run-and-chase linebacker limited to 4-3 systems, Bradham is coming off a career year for the Super Bowl champions.

27 - Avery Williamson LB - Jets

Although strong against the run, Williamson is a base 3-4 inside linebacker with less-than-ideal coverage skills. Can he be a three-down player?

28 - Morgan Burnett S - Free Agent

Burnett has been Green Bay's most consistent performer in the secondary the past two years, but injuries are starting to add up for a player nearing the age-30 barrier.

29 - Dion Lewis RB - Titans

Lewis is one of the most effective per-play backs in the league, but he's also an undersized injury risk best utilized in space. Will he be another role player exposed outside of New England?

30 - Star Lotulelei DT - Bills

Lotulelei is a dependable starter on the interior, but he doesn't make enough impact plays to merit a high-dollar contract.

31 - Weston Richburg C - 49ers

A standout early in his career, the 26-year-old missed 12 games in 2017 because of a concussion. He's the best center available on the market.

32 - Terrelle Pryor WR - Free Agent

His disastrous season in Washington doesn't erase the ball skills and after-catch ability he displayed in his 1,000-yard campaign for the Browns. A return to Cleveland looms.

33 - E.J. Gaines CB - Free Agent

Traded to Buffalo in the Sammy Watkins deal, Gaines completed a rock-solid season as a starter in the Bills' cornerback-friendly defense. He's a capable option for zone defenses.

34 - AJ McCarron QB - Free Agent

McCarron was a mixed bag in his four starts in 2015, and there's no telling how he's developed since then. He's likely to be the latest backup quarterback to see his price go up by not playing.

35 - Trey Burton TE - Bears

Blocked by Zach Ertz for playing time, Burton excelled when Ertz was out with injury. Burton is the type of high-upside athletic "move" tight end that every team is looking for.

36 - Jack Mewhort OL - Free Agent

Limited to roughly 1,000 snaps combined over the last two years because of knee injuries, Mewhort was an excellent second-round find at right guard before that.

37 - Tyler Eifert TE - Free Agent

One of the biggest X-factors in this free agency class, Eifert is among the best tight ends in football when healthy. But he's played a total of 24 games in the last four years, including 10 over the last two seasons because of persistent back issues.

38 - Jordan Matthews WR - Free Agent

He proved in Philadelphia he can produce out of the slot, with 225 catches in his first three seasons. He proved in Buffalo he's not talented enough to transcend problematic surroundings.

39 - DaQuan Jones DL - Free Agent

A favorite sleeper on this list, Jones has position versatility and the ability to take on multiple blockers. He's remained under the radar because he does so much dirty work.

40 - Julius Peppers DE/OLB - Free Agent

Still good for double-digit sacks in his late 30s, Peppers has reached the stage of a Hall of Fame career where it will prove difficult to lure him away from his hometown Carolina team.

41 - Tahir Whitehead LB - Free Agent

Whitehead has been the best linebacker in Detroit the past two years, which speaks more to the Lions' lack of star power than his own prowess as an above-average starter.

42 - Brent Grimes CB - Bucs

The end could come at any time for a cornerback entering his mid-30s, but Grimes is still playing at a high level as one of the most explosive NFL athletes of the past decade.

43 - Paul Richardson WR - Redskins

The bizarro Marqise Lee, Richardson is a dangerous big-play threat best utilized on downfield routes.

44 - Morris Claiborne CB - Free Agent

Claiborne might never live up to his No. 6 overall pick pedigree, but he's been a rock-solid starter -- when healthy -- the past two years.

45 - Marqise Lee WR - Jaguars

Once christened the "albino tiger" for his rare appearances on the field, Lee has suited up for 30 of Jacksonville's past 32 regular-season games. A flanker with strong catch-and-run abilities, the former USC star isn't much of a deep threat or red-zone weapon.

46 - Ryan Jensen OL - Free Agent

A backup for three years, Jensen solidified Baltimore's pivot position as a 16-game starter in 2017.

47 - Prince Amukamara CB - Bears

Rent-a-corner keeps supplying league-average starter value on one-year contracts.

48 - Josh McCown QB - Jets

The ideal bridge quarterback, McCown is essentially a player-coach at this stage of his career. A red-flag injury risk entering his age-39 season, McCown is perhaps most valuable as a wet nurse for a talented but raw young stallion.

49 - Preston Brown LB - Free Agent

Tailor-made for Sean McDermott's defense, Brown tied for the league lead in tackles last season. That speaks more to the specious value of tackles as a statistic than Brown's impact as a difference-maker.

50 - Josh Sitton G - Free Agent

For the second time in three seasons, Pro Football Focus' grading system appreciated Sitton more than his own team. That's a red flag, but he can still start at 31 years old.

97. Jahri Evans (34) -- Late-career mercenary had solid season as Packers starting right guard.

98. Tom Johnson (33) -- Forced into starting job with MIN last year. Better used as rotational DT.

99. Dominique Easley (25) -- Has suffered 3 ACL tears. Disruptive, penetrating DT when healthy.

100. Danny Amendola (32) -- "Playoff Danny" has never reached 700 receiving yards in a season.

Free agent CB Sam Shields will visit the Browns.

Shields hasn't played since Week 1 of the 2016 season, when he was still a Packer. Shields finished that year on injured reserve before spending 2017 out of the league. He turned 30 in December. Were he to land a Browns contract, he would be facing long odds of cracking the 53-man roster.

Raiders released OLB Aldon Smith.

The Raiders had been keeping Smith around on the reserve/suspended list on the off chance he got his affairs in order and was reinstated, but it has become clear that's not going to happen. TMZ reported earlier Monday that Smith had checked into rehab following a domestic violence incident with his fiancee. Still somehow only 28, Smith hasn't played a down since 2015. His career is almost certainly over.

NBC Denver's Mike Klis reports the Broncos are "very much in" on free agent Kirk Cousins.

That's "per team and player sources." There's a report out that Cousins is "down to" the Vikings and Jets, but the sides aren't technically even allowed to talk yet. (Emphasis on "technically.") The "legal tampering" — we really need to rename that — period begins next Monday before free agency kicks off that Wednesday.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Panthers will franchise tag K Graham Gano if the sides cannot reach a long-term deal by Tuesday's tag deadline.

The Panthers have prioritized tagging Gano over OG Andrew Norwell. Evidently, Norwell doesn't fit in the budget. One of the tag's primary functions has become preventing kickers from reaching the open market. That wasn't the intended use of the "franchise" tag.

Bills signed Chris Ivory to a two-year, $5.5 million contract.

The deal includes $3.25 million guaranteed. Ivory did not shine in Jacksonville, but he is just two years removed from a Pro Bowl season in which he rushed for 1,070 yards and seven scores. At worst, he is better than any of the options the Bills had behind LeSean McCoy last season.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Richard Sherman "has told teammates goodbye over the last 24 hours" and says he won't be on the Seahawks in 2018.

Rapoport's colleague, Tom Pelissero, reports Sherman will meet with GM John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll on Wednesday to "discuss his future." This all started with a cryptic tweet from teammate CB Jeremy Lane, suggesting Sherman was leaving the team. The Seahawks can save $11 million in cap space by cutting Sherman, who is entering the final year of his deal. The hangup, however, is that Sherman is not even close to being healthy after tearing his right Achilles' last season and then needing a cleanup on his left one this offseason. This situation bears watching in the coming hours and days leading up the new league year. Sherman denies RapSheet's report.

Can they cut him while he's injured? I guess they can, right?

Patriots released TE Martellus Bennett.

The move saves the Patriots $6.2 million against the cap and comes before the team was set to pay Bennett a $2 million roster bonus. Bennett turns 31 this month and had an injury-filled 2017 between the Packers and Patriots. He brought up retirement last year but now plans to play in 2018.

Bengals signed DT Chris Baker, formerly of the Bucs, to a one-year contract.

The deal is worth a "little more than $3 million." Baker is reportedly down to 300 pounds. He signed a three-year, $15.75 million deal with the Bucs prior to the 2017 season but recorded only a half-sack over 15 games and was released in February. Baker should slide in as a starter next to Geno Atkins in Cincy.

Cowboys released DE Benson Mayowa.

Releasing Mayowa frees up $2.75 million in cap space for the Cowboys. Mayowa, going on 27, is only two seasons removed from leading Dallas with six sacks. He played in 381 of a possible 920 snaps in 2017 and should garner interest in the open market given his historically prominent run defense.

ESPN's Dianna Russini reports Broncos CB Aqib Talib's "top choice" is to reunite with the Patriots.

Russini adds that the Broncos had trade talks with the 49ers regarding Talib, but "it doesn't look like it's going to get done." Talib is more likely to be cut, where he could get his Patriots reunion wish after Talib spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons in New England before signing a big-money deal in Denver. Talib is 32 years old, but he continued playing at a high level in 2017 and is a man-coverage corner. The Pats played more man than any team in football last year.

One NFL official told the Miami Herald the Dolphins releasing DT Ndamukong Suh remains "under consideration."

The source reportedly didn't say whether the move is likely or unlikely, merely that it's being considered. The Herald reported in February Suh would likely be designated as a post-June 1 release if cut, which would save the Fins $17 million under the salary cap. $8.5 million of Suh's $17 million salary becomes guaranteed on March 19. Suh turned 31 in January and hasn't missed a game since 2011. He would be an extremely hot commodity on the open market.

The NY Post's Paul Schwartz reports the Giants are not interested in re-signing free agent C Weston Richburg.

Richburg missed the final 12 games of 2017 with a concussion that landed him on injured reserve. He played center for the Giants the last three seasons but started 15 games at guard in 2014. Now healthy, he's undoubtedly considered one of the top offensive linemen available on the market.

NFL draft insider Tony Pauline says "belief" around the league is free agent OG Andrew Norwell signing with the Giants is "a done deal."

The top guard on the market, Norwell was one of ex-Panthers GM Dave Gettleman's most-prized discoveries as an undrafted free agent. Gettleman now runs the Giants, who have needs all over the line. At $11.7 million per year, the Raiders made Kelechi Osemele the NFL's highest-paid guard in 2016. Osemele was topped by Browns RG Kevin Zeitler's $12.0 million annually last offseason.

According to Draft Insider's Tony Pauline, "just about everybody believes" free agent LB Anthony Hitchens will sign with the Colts.

Indy beat writers have hinted at this, as well; new Colts DC Matt Eberflus was Hitchens' position coach in Dallas. A solid run stopper with experience at all three linebacker positions, Hitchens typically came off the field on passing downs as a Cowboy. He would play middle linebacker in the Colts' new 4-3.

According to 9 News Denver's Mike Klis, the Patriots and Broncos "have engaged" in trade talks involving Aqib Talib.

Klis notes the Pats are just "one of several teams" to have talks regarding Talib, but New England is also known to be Talib's preferred destination. The 49ers also discussed a Talib deal, but it's believed those discussions fell through. Klis expects Talib's trade market to be strong enough that the Broncos won't have to cut him, and could still come away with some compensation.

It would be great if the Bronco's could get a 2nd rounder for Talib. The Pats have 2 of them.
