I'm thinking about doing away with my disposable blades and trying the safety blade as well. I have really light and thin beard, so I often go 4-5 days without shaving. Around day 5 it gets a bit darker and I need to shave (I call it my Friday shadow). Problem is, is so long it usually hurts to shave with the disposable. Is it any better with the safety blade, or would I need to just shave more often to avoid it?

A safety razor works well on longer facial hair. At least it did for me...didn't shave for a couple weeks. It's only one blade so you're taking shorter strokes. The shave is as close as i've ever had but my face feels like it's burning afterwards. I haven't used mine in probably over a year. It's cheaper but a lot more time consuming. For that reason i usually use my Gillette Power Fusion once per week and my electric razor the other 4 days. With you only shaving once a week it'd probably be worth your while.

Been shaving with a straight razor for over a year, once you get used to it you never cut yourself. A barber shavette is a good place to start, runs about 10 bucks, uses half a safety razor blade (disposable no sharpening) and keeps you from cutting too deeply.

Try it, once you got with an old school straight razor you will never go back.

Been just over a year since I switched to a safety razor, sill love it! Still amazes me how close of a shave I can get with this Merkur.

On a side note, runny noses also make good lube for shaving your upper lip, jeez, it is like a faucet today, damn allergies! My lip is pretty dang smooth, with hardly any shaving cream applied, Lol

Shave every day and it's just fine. If you use good shaving soap and let the razors weight don't he work you should get no burn.

I have to shave every day or it pulls when using a regular multi blade razor. I last shaved Thursday evening, shaved today with the safety razor, no problems! They are so sharp, and as stated, you use a shorter stroke, so it makes it very easy and pain free.

There are some good Youtube videos on how to use a safety razor, Art of Manliness or something like that has some good ones.

Edit: Here it is.

I've been a head shaver for about 15 years. Edge pro gel and Schick Hydro 5 has been the best I've used so far.

Who uses shaving cream?
I don't.
I've never used shaving cream EVER!
My routine is I shave soon after I get out of the shower and never had any problems doing it that way. Of course I can't shave before showering because is hurts and it's a pain in the butt.
After a shower everything is tamed and soft.

Yes. Maybe make sure you're using a really good one. The cost of the razors alone is worth it. And single blade razors will last longer than the multi-blade ones Gillette and the big companies want to stuff down your face. And they'll shave you closer for sure. I will say I have a beard all year now, so my shaving practice is reduced to parts of my cheeks and my neck. So shaving isn't something I do as often or as much.

It's interesting because since this thread was started, an entire industry of alternatives to Schick and Gilette have spawned with the shave clubs and other companies who are willing to make functionally the same item but not charge you the cost of a video game to replace them every month and even mail them to your home.
